Genetics of Snow Gophers

fishlady2001 Apr 06, 2009 09:10 PM

Hi! I'm a new poster! I just picked up what appears to be a snow gopher from a guy on craigslist- he was not snake saavy, told me he got it at a reptile show maybe last year, not sure of age, variety, or much of anything. His ad said albino gopher snake and to my joy when I showed up it looks more like a snow gopher (I have an albino and normal- fun breedings ahead!)

Anyway, is the snow trait in gophers complex like in some other snakes, meaning does she have the potential for anery, albinos, and snows, or is it simple like albino where they are just het for snow if bred to normal?

I am asking partly because as soon as introduced to my other two she met with the affections of my normal male, and I'm wondering what kind of hets may I expect, then what might I get when breeding offspring back? Just snows, or ???

Thanks in advance!!

The gopher species I am familiar with all have snow being the combination of aney and amel. Also as far as I know in all the varieties of gopher both of those traits are recessive. Hope that helps, I'm sure others with more experience will chime in. The only type I currently work with are Pacific Gophers(pituophis catenifer catenifer).

Maybe it's a snow bullsnake.

He said she was a gopher, and her head is more slender like my other gophers. How could I tell for sure between a gopher and a bull? I know that gophers and bulls are closely related, but would they interbreed that easily? As soon as I introduced her my male made his advances. From the pictures I looked at, she looks very much like the snow gophers on envy reptiles site- the ones that are nearly all white with just a hint of a pattern. Thanks for the help!

Could you post up a few pictures so people can better assist you?

I would love to, but I seem to be having difficulty- my files are too big. If you look at envy reptiles images she really looks just like that- I included a link to the one that is the closest (please nobody at envy get upset- your snakes are gorgeous and I can't seem to attach my own photos!) I really am just curious about what to expect when she is bred to my normal male, my albino (if its male), and the genetics of the offspring- possible het combos, what I might get when bred back, etc. Thanks!

You can edit the photo's in paint or any photo editing program. Just reduce/stretch/skew by a percentage to get the file size small enough to post on whatever photo post site you are using. I'm using photobucket at the moment and it let's you go up to 1MB and 1024x768 I think.
