Filter Question

honeybee Sep 12, 2003 09:51 AM

I have my young RES in a 30 ga. tank. The tank is nearly filled to the top w/ water and there is a large outcropping of rocks in the corner for basking. Right now, I have a Penguin 125 Bio-Wheel filter. It sucks water in and splashes it back into the tank. Overall, it doesn't seem very effective. I want to invest in a better filter. Any suggestions?

You might want to try a canister filter. I have the Magnum350 by marineland and it works great. Fluval also makes canister filters. The reviews on both are great. There are different GPH levels to choose from, and with turtles, too much is not enough 8-). Mine does 350gph for 40 gallons, it may seem like overkill but it keeps the tank clean. If you do get a canister filter, look into getting quick valve disconnects. They make disconnecting and cleaning the filter MUCH easier. Here is a link to the model I have minus the BioWheel. Hope this helps.

I have a 20 gallon and have had great success with the fluval canister filter. A few positive points fluval comes in 4 sizes, you can get adittional filter medium such as carbon and polyester filters in conjuction with the foam key pads can remove debris chemicals medications discoloration and other impurities plus if your running low on cash and cant replace the foam pads that week (only temorary!) you can take the pads out and rinse them off in the original tank water as to keep that benificial bacteria present and reuse them. It will buy you at least another week or so as to re think your budjet for this o so important item its a good idea, in all filters; to have an extra supply of filter mediums on hand. These guys cant shop for themselves. remember routine routine routine
