I have a yellow rat that I found under my wifes purse back in 2006 when we lived in Melbourne, Fla. Ironically, I went back to that home last week to visit, and while I was away she laid 10 eggs. This was a big surprise because 1) I had never sexed her before, and 2) she has never met a male.

Is it common for a female to drop a clutch without having been fertilized? If so, how long before she might be ready to have a go of it with a male?
