Michigan Law on native turtle questions?

tgreb Apr 07, 2009 10:35 AM

Can anyone help me here. I have written several letters and made several calls regarding what it takes to breed a few of our native species. I have left messages with no return call and no return e-mails. It is very frustrating. I gather I need permits and if so are they granted or is it just a waste of time? I think it used to be if you bought the breeding stock out of state then you could breed and sell those but after reading the NY post below I am not sure I want to assume anything. I want to folow rthe law. I have even heard that a guy got the ok to purchase from so called licensed breeders here in MI from the DNR then got prosecuted later saying the guy he called about was not a licensed breeder. The case finally got thrown out but it cost the guy thousands. I mean I am almost afraid to have anything to do with the DNR here. He even had it in writing. If you can't take their word who the hell do you ask about this stuff?

Thanks for your help
Tom

Tom,

I sent you a message regarding the Michigan laws as far as what I have gathered so far. The DNR does not regulate the turtles here. They only regulate the "take" of turtles from the wild and also regulates the turtles that cannot be taken. The breeding of native turtles is regualted by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and then falls under the "Aquaculture" issues. If you don't get the other message I sent you my email address is :huntersridge2887@hotmail.com
Drop me a line there and we can go over this a little more.

Jim
