monitor substrait????

beardslycrew Apr 07, 2009 11:41 PM

I went to home depot to look for top soil, but they said that it is mixed with poo. This is bad correct? I am wondering what exactly everyone uses for a digable sub. I am getting a hatchling monitor so would it be ok to use alot of coco fiber and some sand? Also I am wondering If peat moss is good to use instead of top soil. It looks pretty safe as far as I can tell.
any help will be much appreciated.

I couldn't find dirt I liked when I filled my last enclosure. So I used this.

mixed with this

Yes, I was sore the next day.

Usually the cheap dirt at my home depot does not have manure in it. It is around $1.70 a bag.

I am fortunate in that I can just go out to the abandoned lot behind where I live and dig up a wonderful desert dirt deposited by old Columbia river floods.

Despite that, I sometimes use those blocks of coconut fiber (the kinds you add water to and it expands) for the more forest-y animals.

Both seem to work for me.

Peat is not a good choice.

Try another nursery or garden center for plain top soil. Which is not potting soil.
