Excessive thirst in new gecko

aphillipi Apr 08, 2009 08:45 AM

I just rescued a gecko from a pretty nasty situation where he was kept in a 10 gallon aquarium full of play sand without any hide areas or proper heating. Since I've had him he's started eating and I've gotten all the built up shed off of him. The one thing out of the ordinary is that he is EXCESSIVELY thirsty. He will put his head in the water bowl and not stop lapping up the water until it's all gone and then go into his humid hide and lick the damp paper towels. This has been going on for the past 2 days. Is this a sign of some kind of parasite or infection or is he just thirsty? Thanks!

It may very well be he is thirsty. If he didn't have a water dish with water accessable all the time then he may be dehydrated just keep a nice fresh dish of water for him and a dish of calcium powder with d3. Remember to feed him gut loaded dusted crickets cause he is probable under nurished as well. GL
