Ackie rearing enclosure.

ryan_m Apr 08, 2009 09:21 PM

Hey everyone,
My name is Ryan McDonald and have been watching this forum for the last 5-6 months. I live in Canada and have finally found a reputable ackie breeder and have been put on a waiting list for three unrelated reds. I have gained alot of knowledge about husbandry and diet predominantly through this forum and feel that I am up to the task of keeping these guys healthy. I will not be getting the reds for a few months and was wondering what you would reccomend as a rearing enclosure? I was thinking of picking up a 36 long aquarium and create my own solid top lid to hold humidity. Is this an acceptable size for hatchling ackies? I will eventually be keeping them in a galvanized trough set up...the aquarium will simply be to get them off to a good start. I have not purchased the aquarium yet so if the pros here think there is a better choice it is not to late for me to go a different way. Thanks for the help.
-Ryan

I use rubbermaids with a wood top on them I believe the size is 26 qt.. I dont like having glass walls since they dont recognize it as a barrier.

We have raised hundreds of Ackie babies in 20 gallon long tanks.

Your 30 something is fine, it just gets a bit tougher to keep track of all the animals and their initial progress the larger the cage is.

As babies? Sure, we raise hatchlings in 20 gallon long tanks all the time.

i'm just worried that it could be too much space and the babies wouldn't all get equal portions, or that the temps wont be right.
