Coastal adult caging questions

PHFaust Apr 08, 2009 11:42 PM

As I have aquired a few adult coastals over time, I am wondering as I adjust my caging, is the need to climb as apparent in adult coastals as I see in my 08 coastal? Debating the need to create climbing arrangements for the adults and if I do I am open to all suggestions.

They don't need it as adults, However, all will use them, I have an entire upper level in my adult males cage and hes always perching, they remind me of a poor mans diamond

Do you use more shelving? Or something more like tubes? I was thinking of doing a PVC type of set up with a few levels available.

Another question, they seem fairly dwarfed in the 4 foot neos they are in (old style rectangle, much like a 4 foot vision in size). Do they need that much space? I'm more accustomed to the larger bodied less active pythons here and since these are personal pets, I work at giving them the best since, well they are staying. The rescues get general basic caging as it is easier to disinfect.

personally i do the it on a snake by snake bases. right now i keep 1.1 coastals, 1.1 ij's, and scrubs.
my male coastal i removed all climbs and perches from his cage as he never used them, female coastal still has them in there as she will spend a good bit of time on them. the ij's my male i swear is gtp with as much time as he spends on them and my female will perch every once in awhile.

for branches i use "burned" pvc pipe. they seem to like it better than just plain ole pvc.

By burned do you mean literally burned such as with a torch? I just see so little of my cage space utilized honestly, which is why I am looking at climbing ideas...

yep you take a torch burn it till its brown. working in small areas of the pipe. when it turns brown its soft so you can dimple, twist, or bend or all three. i used to use just plain pvc then on this forum actually, saw a guy with some jungles and those burned pvc branches. so i did it and saw an instant change in how much my snakes use them. except my male coastal.

after you burn them you need to cool it off in water as it cools it will harden also you'll need to scrub the heck out of them to get all the residue off of them.
