Beginner's Luck

Well I thought I had lost some of this clutch but was able to bring the eggs back around by applying more water. Here is the clutch. Dam was a normal, sire was a mojave. Only one mojave but she is a full striped one so that is cool...and it's a girl. This was my first try at BPs. I'm feeling good right now. 57 days to hatch at 87 degrees. Odd thing about this clutch is that 4 of the 6 have their tip end of the tails curled back on top of itself. Kind of a bummer but otherwise healthy. I'm assuming the tucked tail is a result of too dry of substrate.

are you sure the mother was just a normal? a couple of those babies look like they might have a lil something extra going on.

I had a clutch with Dairy Queen tails once...I thought it was from the female's poor diet the year before maybe?....huge girl, just got her, years ago...all the tails almost had an upright curl.........I have had a few with curls again.....you know...might be too dry.....hmmm....I had a few of them clutches also.....incubator setup wrongly......

...I'll have to watch again.......see if it happens again..........

J-
Dairy Queeen - Funny but true.

Diet - Doubt it but more clutches will give more data to analyze. I'm betting water/moisture. I had someone tell me it was the result of the embryo not having enough room to develop inside the egg "crowded".

Thanks Dale. The advice you gave was spot on and I appreciate it. They are pretty interesting looking normals. The mojave female is going in the breeding colony. Next clutches expected are Pastaves and more mojaves.

Russ:

Congratulations on having your first successful hatch.

To remedy the dry substrate issue try mixing your vermiculite to a one to ratio by weight with water. I have been using this techique for many many years and the recipe works everytime.

Take a plastic shoe box and drill a 1/8" diameter hole at each end about an inch from the top. Weigh the amount of vermiculite it takes to cover an inch and a half of the bottom of your nest box. Take the same amount of water by weight and pour it onto the vermiculite and mix thoroughly, that's it! Put your eggs into the box, place the lid on and start cooking.

This tecnique will give you conistant humdity during incubation and will take the guessing game out of the process. Good luck with the rest of your clutches.
