We don't use the snake hook to lift the larger burms, just to let them know it's not feeding time. Once they are out of feed mode we reach into the cage and pick them up with our hands.

I'm sure Mike (HH) can tell you something about building snake hooks, he's built a few.

Here's a lightweight DIY hook that I use with all of my snakes, both, big & small.

Have a good one!

I have made a few of my own, and although they aren't pretty they are very functional.I get old golf clubs from the local good
will stores. Then I get 3/8" round stock from Lowe's for about $3 a piece. I get the clubs for about $1-$2 each ( last time the lady gave me like 15 of them for $10) and I can get enough pieces out of stick of round stock to make 3 hooks.I ground the ends of my hooks flat to make it easier to get them under heavy bodies,so I really should paint them to keep them from oxidizing. I use an angle grinder to cut alternating notches in the shaft part of the hook that goes into the shaft of the club after I cut the head off. Then I fill the end of the golf club shaft with a 2 part epoxy resin (AKA JB weld) and let them set over night and there you have it.The old golf clubs can be had a LOT of places for cheap: goodwill, craigslist, garage sales, want ads, etc.
