can snakes and blue night-glo lights

yankeeslover Apr 10, 2009 07:31 AM

Hello...was told by my local reptile shop that snakes can not see the blue night-glo lights that are on the market that simulate the moon. Is this true? I purchased one, mainly more for heat at this point at night, but I wonder if this light would scare him at all? or if its bad for him? I dont use a UTH yet at this point, but may purchase one later on if needed. I have tons of clamp lamps and different bulbs and using that to heat, in fact, I use the red night bulb to heat the warm end of the tank during the day, as it gets the warm end around 85ish, and that light doesnt bother them. Im just wondering about that exo-tera night-glo light, Just wondering if anyone has used these, and if they bother there snakes at night? it does not seem very bright at all, i can hardly notice it, but can they?
I know most are gonna advise me use a UTH, but at this point its not an option as Mortgage and car payment has to come first this month...Please be kind...LOL!!!

With your situation in consideration, everything should be fine.

I personally think the blue or red bulbs are a waste of money and for corn snakes completely useless. They don't need nighttime heat as room temperature is rarely cold enough to be harmful to them, especially if you live in areas of the US that are part of their natural range.

They can do fine with nighttime drops as low as 60F which is colder than most household room temperatures.

My Corn and King snakes stay in an empty storage room attached to my house that has no heat going to it. In the winter it can drop to the mid to low 50's and I have found no ill effects. I suspect I may have to change the arrangements this summer as the 100F temps outside are sure to make this room to hot for them but this will be my first summer in our new home and only time will tell.

you should get an a/c unit now and have it set up on a thermostat prior to any high temps. 1 day of work at too high of temps can kill snakes....i know i had a heater failure last year and lost 4 of my adults and almost lost 2 more that still are not right

When I die, I want to go peacefully like my Grandfather did, in his sleep -- not screaming, like the passengers in his car.

I know I'm gonna be 'the one' advising the UTH here, but mostly because I'm confused.. UTHs for corns cost what, $20?? That is a LOT less than buying all these different lamps and their expensive bulbs.
