Hondo Breeding Question

jcs_colubrids Apr 10, 2009 04:27 PM

I got this pair of hondos and the female is a proven breeder and the male has just turned four (never breed). This is my first trying to breed hondos and the female is not receptive at all to the male. my corns have mated and most of my females are gravid about to lay. but im new to the hondos so is it too early yet for them or should they have breed already. She has shed twice since hibernation. thanks

Two issues with Hondurans-

1-They tend to breed late. Sometimes they will mate following the first shed, but just as often they wait until the second or even the third post brumation shed. Heavy feeding can sometimes speed up this process, but not always.

2- Hondurans can be very secretive about their mating activities, often waiting until the wee hours of the morning before doing the deed. I'd bred hondurans for several years before actually witnessing a hookup!

Be patient, feed up the female, and keep introducing the male until you're sure the female is gravid....
