Vermiculite/Perilite Question

niddy Apr 10, 2009 04:46 PM

Hey again guys! Looks like my other gal may be gravid, and I'm out of vermiculite. Plus, I'm wondering with my lack of luck with hatching eggs if I even got the right kind in the first place. My empty bag says:

Sta-Green Horticultural Vermiculite (sorry bout the brand-naming...but I really AM confused). Says it's 100% vermiculite, so I assume there are no additives.

But I just went to Wal-Mart AND Lowe's, and EVERYTHING has "Miracle Grow" in it, which I'm assuming is bad.

I'm so frustrated, and my gal's diggin like crazy, so I gotta find some substrate soon.

Any ideas?

Thanks, guys!

If you can find it ,Hatch Rite incubation substrate
works well and is easy to use.i have had good success
when using it.

Mine says "Hoffman Horticultural Vermiculite." It also says "Sold exclusively through premier garden centers." lol. I get it from an independent garden nursery/garden center rather than the box stores. I wouldn't get the Miracle Grow one. I'd hate to have to weed my egg bins. lol.

Mine is 'Holiday' brand..but doubt you get it down in the states as its made/packaged in Montreal, Quebec. I bought it from a feed/seed store.

Your best bet is to go to a garden center or feed/seed type store and by the big bags...I paid about $15 for a huge bag, probably last me a decade as I don't breed much. But the little bags they had were $5 and maybe would be good for a couple clutches of eggs... so for the cost of three of these little bags I would have over 10 times as much as three little bags..I went for the big bag.

Pull out your yellow pages and call the garden centers near you and the feed/seed places and ask if they have plain coarse vermiculite without any additives.

Thanks guys! I just ordered what Randy suggested on our trusty triple L website. (is your name seriously Randy Taylor, like on Home Improvement? Way cool!)

Kids are sick, so couldn't go off looking for Ma and Pa's Nursery lol

Doubting that Minerva's Gravid now anyway. She just digs for a couple hours a day (4th day now), then goes back to basking. Dunno...
