My SNOW ovens for this year ...

GainesReptiles Apr 10, 2009 09:45 PM

OK, it was way back in 2005 since I last produced any Snow boas ... I sold off 75% of my breeders over the past years, and after a 3-1/2 year wait, I will be back into the Snow business with a small group of breeders.

Here's what's cooking now ...

> High Yellow Coral Albino Het SNOW
> Anery Het SNOW
> SNOW (who says female Snows don't go?)

All these girls are popping and they are not due until late May ... they were bred by their male counterparts, meaning all litters should include SNOWs, Albinos, Anerys, and DHets.

You and me both ... with all these genes working in so many different combinations, the odds are increased of getting something a little "out of the ordinary" ... who knows, it might be my lucky year?

Hey Bill:

It's great to see your animals on the forum.

Best of luck with all of your projects.

It was great talking to you yesterday. I always enjoy our conversations.

Hey, Brian ... yes, after our phone conversation I decided to take some time off the daily routine and take some quick pics even though it is not my thing.

I really do look forward to this year's offspring ... lots more T-pos Argentines, and hoping for some Bloods and Leopards (both would be a 1st for me), plus some other odds and ends.

Yes, she looks like she is going to explode at anytime. But my non-gravid females are actually much larger ... 8' and 35-40#.

I know there has been lots of thoughts and theories (I hate theories and speculations). An interesting observation ... this girl never thermoreguates, but rather stays on her hot spot 100% of the time.

FRoberts Apr 11, 2009 12:00 PM

Do they look like they are going to explode as well?... prob not, but I wouldn't mind seeing some pic's of them (non-gravid females).

Are you saying there are opinions that female snows don't produce progeny ? (I am kinda out of the loop with boa propaganda).

GainesReptiles Apr 11, 2009 12:31 PM

Sorry, no time these days for a lot of pics, but my non-gravid females look quasi-gravid all year around.

Yes, I have heard 2nd hand that there are opinions that female Snows don't produce progeny. Breeders with little to no experience have been mis-informed to expect litters in 3 years ... my experience has told me that Columbians take much longer to mature than the Central Americans ... expect to wait 4-6 years (sometimes, longer).

I really wish those nay-sayers would ask me ... I did produce 30 Snow boas in 2005 ... plus I think this girl speaks for herself.

Here are some of my old-time pics from 2005:

Those are some of the nicest snows I have ever seen. Congrats on the upcoming litters. Have you produced from both snow males and females?

Spencer

gainesreptiles Apr 12, 2009 10:07 PM

Thanks, Spencer ... yes, both SNOW males and females ... this year's Snow female is my 3rd Snow female.

I have never really gone after a Snow x Snow breeding, only because I wanted to continue outbreeding and optimize my total Snow boa production.

Here is photo of 1 of my exciting breeding attempts 2 years ago ... male Blood x female Snow ... unfortunately, it never happened.

cbmorphs Apr 11, 2009 09:30 AM

Wow, that Snow is getting big! I can only imagine what you have cooking in there! Best of luck with all your Momma's! I hope you have many, many, many healthy baby boas this year...

Nice looking Coral Momma too!

Chaz Neely

GainesReptiles Apr 11, 2009 10:51 AM

Lots of Mommas this year ... maybe 75-80% females are gravid ... I already put my wife on notice that I may need help this year with the neonates.

snowboas Apr 11, 2009 01:40 PM

My wife didn't mind the snakes while we were dating...once we got married, I found out the true story and now she won't touch them! so much for help w/ neonates!
Jeremy

GainesReptiles Apr 11, 2009 02:08 PM

Jeremy ... I am wearing a T-shirt right now that says "NEVER NEVER QUIT" ... I used to wear it to my son's swim meets through his college days (NCAA Div III - 4th in the Nation 2 years in a row). Anyways, I apply the same thinking to my reptile endeavors.

THEN (1978): When my wife and I were newlyweds, I used to beg her for an entire month to let me spend $200 on a pair of kingsnakes. Also, I had to raise and hussle mice to the local pet stores to raise the money.

NOW (2009): After 30 years of marriage, the last boa I purchased was in the neighborhood of $15,000 (all Cash, NO trade).

The really neat thing was a moment just a couple nights ago ... while watching Survivor they naturally showed a snake up in a tree flicking its tongue ... and my wife yelled out "Emerald Tree Boa" ... I instantly applauded her and ran over and gave her a Hi 5 ... You've Gotta Love It!

symetryexotics Apr 11, 2009 02:14 PM

Very nice story! I hope it is the same way for me

Ruben14 Apr 11, 2009 03:52 PM

Goodluck wih those Bill. That Albino is awesome! Great color on that one.

gainesreptiles Apr 11, 2009 06:41 PM

Thanks, Ruben ... my current Snow project is composed of the "best of the best" that I produced in 2005, so I am hoping for some great-looking offspring.

I have been following the forums on your litters this year ... I guess you are experiencing a typical initiation into the "roller coaster" world of boa breeding. Whether 1 year or 10 years of experience, things don't really change that much ... the only thing that changes with experince is your expectations become more tamed down.

Till Next Time ... Bill

rainbowsrus Apr 11, 2009 06:18 PM

Hey Bill, glad to see you have some serious "ovens" this year.

That Coral Albino looks like she's building a whole new wing to house the babies.

The DH looks nice and full o' babies.

And OMG, that Snow looks great, absolutely glowing!!

Wishing you a great Snowy year, may you have drifts everywhere!!!

I have yet to produce my first snow but do have some possibles this year....

My proven DH x TH Moonglow pair looks like another small litter like last year, got the moonglow last year, maybe get a snow this one.

Also have a Anery het Snow from you that looks like she might have taken but not huge at all

Lastly I have a Huge Albino pos het Snow bred by a Anery pos het Snow....fingers crossed!!!! If those both prove will be an awesome litter.....

26.49 BRB
20.21 BCI
And those are only the breeders

lots.lots.lots feeder mice and rats

gainesreptiles Apr 11, 2009 06:54 PM

Thanks, Dave ... yes, nothing better than some hugh Snow drifts in the early summertime! Actually, on a "sidebar" note ... I have this great Michael Bolton CD and in the middle of all his great hits is White Christmas ... I love playing this CD in the summertime because listening to White Christmas in the hot summer has soothing overtones to the mind. OK, I guess you have to experience it yourself to appreciate it.

Also, the pairing of the Albino and Anery (both possible for the other) is a great way to prove out to boas in a single breeding ... the amazing world of genetics.

Bill

ESglobalherp Apr 12, 2009 10:41 PM

I need a huge snow female. They look outrageous man.

Good luck with all those gravid girls. I hope to make some sweet snow combos this season as well. Can I see some more shots of adult girls? They look unreal.
