perhaps not, but it is possible, if not now, perhaps soon, the fact that they are attempting to do so is proof enough that we can not be lax with our efforts to protect our rights. If they achieve their goal what would you say then?

I personally believe that this bill WILL pass, at least in some form. It is sponsored by some of the heaviest hitters in the democratic party, and they are serious about passing it THIS YEAR. At present, the bill has solid support of the majority party, and is likely to pass along party lines if it gets out of committee.
I think our only hope is to get provisions against interstate transport and the ban on breeding removed. I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think we'll be able to stop this bill totally.

It's the complacency that the other side is counting on. If you don't do something, you can't complain when your rights to keep these animals are gone.
Even IF HR669 does not pass this year, it will be re-introduced next year, and the year after that, and the year after that.
What we should strive to do is become UNITED - put the business political differences aside and become one loud voice. So loud that when the next bills are needing co-sponsors, they will remember this year and our voices and not want to touch it!
Go to ONE local pet store and talk to the manager/owner about HR669 - it's likely they don't even know about it. Ask them to talk to their customers - I've hit about 10 so far, tropical fish stores seem to be the most surprised and most reactive to the news and wanting as much information as they can as to what they can do.
Don't sit and wait for "the other guy" to get involved - they may be counting on YOU to be "the other guy".
Just my $.02
If it passes, I say lock and load, come get my snakes.

For those who think ball pythons will be immune to any type of hard core legislation. Believing it's only going to be about big snakes. Here's an excerpt from a paper that Robert Reed did a few years back . Reed is one of the governments main go to guys when it comes to this stuff.
" Results of the risk-assessment models indicate that species including boa constrictors (Boa constrictor),
ball pythons (Python regius)
, and reticulated pythons (P. reticulatus) may pose particularly high risks as potentially invasive species."
There's no reason to believe this information hasn't been pushed ten times harder this time around. The people that want to shut the reptile world down know the best way to do it is to hit us where it hurts the most. They will go for the throat on key species.

Well the same thing just happened up here in my province (B.C. Canada)
The government started talking about making amendments to the current wildlife laws, and stating it was in order to protect native species. Well the laws just passed and it is the old and unfortunate 2 metre lizard, 3 metre snake. There is no scientific basis on this ban, and unfortunately no merit.
It was told to us as a group of hobbyists, that we would get a meeting with the government to go through species lists and figure which are good, which are bad. 2 weeks before the law past, no communication, and all of the sudden the new changes appear on the website. No other reasoning other than for the protection of the B.C. citizens. Well how many bci's have killed people in all of North America?
So speaking from somebody who has tried to fight the good fight for a while now on this. Please do not give up, please write letters. Write them to newspapers, internet groups, local politicians. Anybody that will listen should know what they are trying to do. Just remember to try and sound polite and professional. They want you to call them names, belittle their lack of knowledge, and poke all the possible holes in their flawed laws. This will in time give them more ammunition.
Good luck, and hopefully they listen to reason.

What we have done is made a small statement with a web link onto a small address label. We attached that to the back of a business card. We hand that out to EVERY PERSON that comes into our store and explain what is being preposed. A lot of people (customers)don't want to do searches on the net, so this makes it easier for them and we feel they are more likely to get involved.
When you tell them it will include, birds, fish and mammals they will be more concerned if they are not into reptiles. Keep fighting, that's all we can do. I haven't spent the last 30 years of my life working my butt off to have someone tell me I have to go out of business!!!!
