humidity and temperature

darkstalker669 Sep 12, 2003 12:00 PM

hi, i keep a hankeli, and the temp in his cage tends to be about high seventies/low eighties. is it ok for me to sustain that sort of temp? also, i use forest floor, and an exo-terro fogger. there is constant fog, very cloudy and such (which looks soooo cool). the humidity level tends to sit at about 80 or so. how can i raise the humidity as well as keep the temp down? i was thinking maybe some moss and eco-earth, maybe some live plants, which i was told keep the humidity up, but i dont really know for sure. any suggestions?

I hope you don't mean that the fogger is running constantly 24/7.

If so, a few words of caution.

1) That fogger is going to wear out eventually. The manufacturer suggests it be run no more than 6-8 hours per day.

2) I hope you have a good method to drain out water from the bottom of the enclosure, because if that thing is running constantly, you will soon have a swamp on your hands.

What kind of enclosure do you have?
The humidity in my enclosure runs quite high with the fogger only running for about an hour a day.

well, i have an 80 gallon tank, i use Forest Floor for the substrate, and i also have some wood in the tank, for gooch to just kinda chill on. also i have fake plants, but im looking into planting real plants, and possibly making a bit of a vivarium out of it, but thats really just an idea. aside from that, i was thinking maybe some moss, but i cant really think of much else.

Live plants will help. Do it. It also refreshes air very nicely.

A background such as cocos (it holds water) would be good as well.

Try a small fountian maybe..but make sure it is something easy to clean!

All sorts of ways to do that.

If you really dig the fog...and this is one thing I do...try to use a vaporizer...I know there is one with a 1/2 inch opening by vics. get a 1/2" -> 1/4" adapter, get a piece of pvc pipe (1/4" ID) get an elbow. and direct the vaporizer into your tank. It will provide a lot more humidity than any fogger. And REALLY looks cool. The push of fog out of the nozzle comes striaght down and hits the ground ... nice effect.

Here is the tough part: Figure out how long the vics takes to bring your cage up to your desired humidity lvl. set the on time to that.

Figure out the time your humidity lvl goes from something acceptable to something unacceptable.

That should do it. Could set that up for around $50 I would assume.

that sounds like a great idea - but a little bit more detail would be appreciated. i kinda get what u are saying, but not positively... also, that continues to cause the problem of drainage, unless i set it up on a timer or something of the sort. any ideas on that?

Is your tank set up with a false bottom? The 65gl I am working on will have one, and a small water pump hiddin, but easy to get to. That way you can tell if your tank is holding to much water. Plug in the pump, and drain off into a bucket or something. 80gl you say? You can set up on hell of a live tank with that much space Goodluck!!

Unfortunately, my tank is not equipped with a false bottom. is there any way to create one for my tank? i would really like to go for a vivarium, i think it would make an awesome tank for Gooch (my henkeli). Any ideas as to how to make on, or what kind to get that has a false bottom already integrated?

Itll cost you about $15

try this link to get a general idea

then go look at poison dart from sites. We all use them. there are lots of sites out there, but the main way always comes back to the one listed above.

good luck
