Snake ID?

xblackheart Apr 11, 2009 03:29 PM

I was thinking this is a hybrid of a bull and corn, but was told the rat snake forum might be able to help me out. There is no background on this snake because it has had multiple owners. Any feedback would be great

someone on one of the other forums thought it might be a calico black rat snake. I'm not very familiar with the black rat morphs. Anyone able to confirm or rule out any black rat id?

actually I think he called them calico cow suckers.
he had lemon cow suckers as well and a few others.

cow sucker is a "local" name for black rat snakes.
just like some areas call them pilot snakes or chicken snakes...etc.

BUT...it may be something entirely different but it definitely reminds me of the calico cow sucker or calico black rat

What's the sex ?.....I'm thinking brindle X corn or rusty x corn
or rusty brindle x corn
The reason I asked about the sex is because you snake has the colors of a male brindle

I also think that's a nice looking hybrid !!!!!!!!!

ameratsnake Apr 11, 2009 10:14 PM

I think rusty black rat X corn, definitely looks like some corn in it!
Here's a brindle, a rusty, and an albino rusty black rat.

xblackheart Apr 12, 2009 06:30 PM

thanks for the pics. The color of the last one reminds me of my guy's coloration a bit. That added to the corn saddles.

Definately a Corn x Baird's hybrid.

xblackheart Apr 12, 2009 06:28 PM

you are like the 4th or 5th person to say that. It seems to have the majority vote, but I just dont see the bairdi. Can you explain your thoughts?

.. I can't answer for Herman but I can explain why I initially mentioned it.

1) the overall appearance still seems ratsnake so a corn x ratsnake (of some form) seems probable.

2) the only ratsnake that came to mind which has a silvery earth tone coloration was bairdi's. The silvery earth tone seems to be the mask/influence on the cornsnake coloration.

3) I didn't think pituophis(bull/gopher/pine) was likely since the main colors there, in general, are yellow and brown/black.

4) the semi striped pigmentaion in the picture reminded me ocf some pics of bairdi's.

I found a couple of pictures online that show the similarities I am talking about.

First is your picture

Next is a photo of a Baird's from www.nearctica.comherpssnakescolubridEbairdi.htm

Next is a photo of a Baird's from www.blairsociety.com

Hope this clarifies some of the similarities I was seeing.

Here are some 08' 50% bairds rat, 25% corn snake, 25% black rat. I would say Baird's X Corn is very likely.

xblackheart Apr 14, 2009 10:37 PM

very cool. Thanks!

xblackheart Apr 13, 2009 09:48 PM

...Parentage is obvious. The second parent though, could be a lot of American ratsnake races. Could be a Gray or a 'Glades as well. Which would also involve some striping.

he has a scar on his nose. Oh, and I am pretty sure he is male. Have not probed, but the tail is very thick, long

I see what they mean about the head looking corn.
I wonder if it is a corn/bairdi. That would be interesting.
I wish someone on here remembered Jeff (I think) and his cow suckers. I'm not really imagining it...I hope....LOL

I remember the snakes you are talking about but I didn't remember which black rat morph they were.
