Thinking of getting some. How big do they get? How do you know its a cherry head and not a normal redfoot? I live on Long Island, NY, can they stay outside at all? What size enclusure would a pair of adults need inside during the winter. All info would be appreciated.

Hi, I cannot speak about size but they do not get as large as redfoots in any case. All I wanted to mention was that I only put my redfoot outside in Connecticut during the day on nice days in late June, July and August and sometimes September. The weather is so variable here that I could never leave them out all summer. And nighttime gets chilly. (I am also afraid of a raccoon getting in the enclosure so I dont leave them out at night) I doubt it gets as chilly in summer on Long Island but thought I would mention it.

I live in Staten Island, NY and I also put my Cherry Head out in the summer...last summer was the first one for him going outside. I mostly brought him in at night too. This year he is bigger and I made a much bigger enclosure, so I might try leaving him out at night. This was taken last year. I had him in a large Christmas Tree storage bin. It got AM sun, until about 2 in the afternoon. I would cover one side for shade if it was too hot.

what kind of plants are those in your enclosure? i would like to have live plants for my cherry head, but i have had no luck keeping them alive and she didnt even seem to eat them. any suggestions?

SIZE...REDFOOTS get to well over 10 inches...adults are 12 to 18 inches.

Cherry Heads rarely get over 10 inches...my adults are still less than 10 inches and have been producing for 3 years.

Cherry heads ...true Cherry heads have a black plastron...look for the black plastron...they also have a very cherry red head...not a red hed...cherry red head...the color on the head varies as far as the amount though.

The babies also seem to have a very distinct look to their carapace...when you see them and compare them you will notice it.
