Orange Racing Stripes, part 2!

Hayseed Apr 13, 2009 12:52 PM

OK, so as I understand it, the orange racing stripes don't necessarily mean she is gravid, or has actually mated, but results from hormonal changes indicating follicular development. So, this means she may be due to lay eggs but could be infertile eggs if there has been no mating. However, the orange stripes may serve as a flag to the males saying "Come hither....do me, do me!" Correct me if I'm wrong!

So, here is my "part 2". I'm still not certain if my other female, Hershey, is actually a male or female. I'm almost certain she's a she, but always had a little doubt. I've wondered sometimes if having two males could be the reason why my boy Kermit was so slow to get started and was not always a good eater. He often acts intimidated compared to the other two.

Also, Hershey has no orange racing stripes. Could it be that Hershey is a boy? I don't have pics of the vital parts underneath that could help answer the question. I need to turn her over and have another look. I named her Hershey because she's the color of milk chocolate!

What do you think? Is it possible this is a boy? Is it common to have the racing stripes on one girl but not another? I guess time will tell.

Here's Hershey (my man/woman lizard)

I'm not entirely sure which locale these are, but Hershey is a fem as far as I can tell. The males of just about every locale and species are noticeably more colorful. If I'm not mistaken, I see very faint orange lines starting to appear on her back. My girls did not "glow" at the same time. One glowed and became gravid and the other didn't ovulate until the other one was already laying. Now two of my desert girls are glowing. So no, they don't necessarily ovulate at the same time.
