This is a non-toxic question with maybe a little bit of a challenge undertone...Am I over reacting to this HR669?? If I ignore this does it fix it's self and go away?

I sent out 176 letters today from eight different people and have more lined up for tomorrow, I have asked all my friends and family members to help voice an opinion and they all will.

By the time I am finished I have set a small personal goal for myself to help send out a total of 330 letters by Wednsday at the latest...my small part.

I myself have a lot of printing to do. ALL my friends and family
are giving me their signature and address's so I ca also do my
part. We need to get those anti reptile interest groups and
lobbyists overwhelmed with paperwork stating what type of a bomb
is going to go off if this bill passes. A couple people other
thank myself are going to write personal letters other than the
'petition' type letters we are trying to get in numbers.

I KNOW 1 DOES NOT MAKE A DIFFERENCE, BUT IF YOU TAKE THAT 1 AND
HAVE THEM TELL 10 AND THEN THEY TELL 10.... SOON WE HAVE A LOT
OF PEOPLE ROOTING FOR OUR CAUSE AS A FREE HUMAN BEINGS IN THIS
WORLD!!

I feel like people are viewing me as a malcontent sometimes, it is funny how people adapt that wait and see attitude.

I guess Just gotta cross my fingers and hope that more people did something about HR669 than is apparent by the lack of interest of the postings...thanks Tom.

I think if anything, people are not reacting enough and I'm glad you and others keep posting these reminders.

I just drafted, printed and signed my 20 letters for each committee member (along with a copy done under my b/f's name) and will be getting those in the mail tomorrow.

Every little bit helps!
Keep spreading the word!

I sent a few letters to Obama's office hoping someone there will read it and get it to him considering he is trying to fix the economy. If Obama only knew Congress is trying to worsen something he is trying to fix. Worth a try right.

i truly believe in the american people, that they will realize, and get educated about, the detrimental affect this bill would have on many, many companies, the economy and people (and their families). dont get me wrong, i am far from being naive about this very scary and troublesome bill that stands before us, and i have for sure done my part in stopping this idiotic and unsound bill. its just another right that the government of today is trying to take from us, next or, maybe even first will be our given right to bear arms. this country is in a downward spiral, we the people need to unite and level it off, and start to bring it back up to the standard to which all other countries envy us for and have for years, decades, and centuries

scary thought I have is,

the possibility that the big players Petco, Pet Smart , Pet Super market along with some of the major suppliers will cut deals with the Humane Society , Peta or one of the spin off groups and turn against us in the near future. For those like myself who have been following the who, what and where's of anti ownership originations for a long time it's crystal clear that this is part of their MO.

If we get by this time they might try to regroup with the support of the Major pet company's etc.. If they get it ..it's going to be curtains. For those that don't understand why the Major pet company's and suppliers would ever team up with the activist ........it's smart business. The reason Peta and the Humane society are huge corporations is because they know how to conduct smart business. As bad this current issue looks what could be right around the corner might be a whole lot worse.

Actually, not only are you dead right but there's a reasonably good chance if it get's thru this hearing some deal may be made without us knowing because we don't have the connections in Washington. Again join PIJAC and USARK who is our spokesman in this Industry. USARK just hired a lobbiest at great expense specifically for us. This takes a lot of money. Please give what you can as this is of upmost importance to the Herp Industry...

write/call all parties involved. I'll be spending the next 10 days before this hearing making as many phone calls as possible and sending out our letters far and wide. Please remember this is a great industry and this is the time that we all need to treat it as such. This is no more, me, myself, and I. It is OUR group, OUR goals, OUR future. Most importantly our children's future is to have the right to not have others dictate what animals will survive the next generation. Reach out to anyone you know who keeps any animal and let him/her know what is going on!

That these "chain" store's stop IMO as they are not informed sources to bring any reptile to a home.

I will even stick my own neck out there that "most" pet stores have no business selling any thing other than basic care reptiles.

Dogs , cats and supplies . Tropical Fish . Small Birds , bearded dragons, leopard geckos, pocket pets, accessories. All keys to the pet trade. Bread and butter. Volume . That's how the big guys work. So what if you can't sell boas , pythons , any exotic stuff . That doesn't mean anything to them .

The reason reptiles are so vulnerable to this type of legislation is because the mainstream pet trade revolves around so few species.

It appears that there's no way HR 669 can work completely as written but if it gets to the point that it looks at least realistic that's where the serious negotiating comes in.

Activist groups and the Major pet trade players will discuss " compromises ". The activist have tried to do it alone in the past and failed. The reason this works for both sides is simple.

Legislation can be worked out that will allow the major players to sell and at the same time put all the mom and pop stores , trade shows and private breeders 6 feet under.

If somebody wants a pet they will have to go to Petco , Pet Smart . Most do now anyway ...so the majority of the pet owning / buying public won't care. This scenario would theoretically increase the profit margins of the large chains to the point that they could painlessly make sizable contributions to the " non profit " organizations of their choice. Win Win.

The main suppliers the key guys on our side will have to roll . Lets say leopard geckos, bearded dragons, corn snakes and kings are allowed . The big guys that produce 50,000 , 100, 000 of these animals aren't going to go out of business . The chains will still need animals. They will work out contracts and be ok.

The same thing with the big fish guys. They will work out an approved fish list based on sales. They'll still sell 10 million fish a year and live happily ever after. Birds etc.

If this happens it's the final straw for the little / mid range guys because it kills our major point of contention . Jobs and money. Take the major players out of the equation and what's left ? A hand full of self employed breeders , small shops that are dropping like fly's anyway and the rest are hobbyist .

The big end of the multi billion dollar a year industry we`er saying needs to be protected is unharmed.

I believe the Major chains and their possible partners have been discussing this a long time. The hold ups are legal , constitutional and internal riffs . Federal fish and game.

A move like this is not easy to pull off no matter who you are. It's very complicated , time , money , aggravation all the numbers have to work. Getting everyone on the same page . It's huge. It's much more then just bullying the little guy out of the picture.

The political climate in the past was not very supportive. The leverage and motivation wasn't there. This new bill could change all that.

Now things are getting ripe to make a move. I think there's a whole lot of number crunching going on . If they can make it work. I think we're in BIG trouble.

This is where our strength in numbers comes in . The more people against the bigger the obstacles. The bigger the back lash the harder it gets to pull this type of move off. Enough resistance and it's not possible. You have to crash thier numbers so that it dosen't work. We can do this.

The activist will be back but I think it will be very hard for them to get this type of momentum up again if they come up short this time around.

Wonderful explanation of the point you are making.I'm glad you spelled it out for me.
Does sound like some very complicated legislation issue to pull off.
This only confirms our need to ban together even further.
We must make it very difficult/impossible for anyone to push us around.

You have been a major contributor and a great asset to us, I know you have "fight" in you...petco/petsmart want dog and cat customers.

I would only hope that there unwillingness to carry reptiles is based on ignorance in their ability to take a profit, I can only imagine that they will focus on the mammal trade...maybe fish.

here in the midwest petco/petsmart both carried horse supplies and recently they have stopped and have expanded there dog/cat retail.

I think we can deal with that dragon when and if it rears it's head....we are moving in the right direction on this post.

Thank you for all your contributions...sincerely.

My ex is helping me out. We've put links and bullitens on myspace and facebook, as well as sending letters and calling ourselves. Yesterday we went to all the local pet shops to make sure they knew about it and had fliers out. I also just contacted our local news station to try to get them to run a story. If we can get this local coverage, maybe soon we can get national coverage. I know how you feel wondering if we're overreacting, but I'd rather do extra and make sure it doesn't pass than just sit back and it end up going through. Then there would be nothing we could do and we'd all be screwed. Everybody keep up the great work!

Dear Mr. Potts:

Thank you for writing me regarding management of invasive species, such as the Burmese python snake, in the Everglades National Park.

Biologists with Everglades National Park confirmed a breeding population of Burmese python in the Florida Everglades in 2003 and speculate that their introduction is most likely the result of released pets. The presence of this snake threatens some 68 endangered species that live in the fragile Everglades ecosystem.

Python populations have since been discovered in Big Cypress National Preserve to the north, Miami’s water management areas to the northeast, Key Largo to the southeast, and many State parks, municipalities, and public and private lands in the region.

Further, new climate maps developed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) suggest that Burmese pythons and other giant snakes are highly adaptable to new environments and could thrive in climactic conditions previously thought prohibitive.

I appreciate your informed policy suggestions on this issue and will keep them in mind. Please do not hesitate to contact me again.
