I don't want to come off sounding offensive, but in the Field Herping world, it's generally considered faux pas to ask for explicit directions. There is much to be said for one going the “extra mile” and figuring things out for themselves. Often, having a little background information regarding the geographic area you want to search and the natural history of your target species persuades those inclined (and able) to provide some further info to come forth. Anyway, these are just a few hints for future reference.

Now, back to your questions… Regarding wildlife laws in the State of South Dakota, I’d start by checking here: www.sdgfp.info. In most states, a license is necessary to collect anything, but searching for and photographing wildlife does not require one. Spring is often a good time to see a variety of herps. What are your target species? Try researching the specific habitats and ecological needs of those species, and then get out the maps and fire up Google Earth.

No offense taken...I should have explained myself better. I wasnt really asking for a treasure map, just a point in the right direction.
Its a very long drive for me and I have never even been to SD before,so I just wondered if someone had any tips or pointers.

I am looking for racers, hogs and milks mainly. Looks like south western south dakota will be where Im going.
And Im sure that collecting is outta the question as with most states...so i will just be exploring and taking pics.
Thanks for your reply
