just like a new mom....I'm back for more advice

Although the vet gave Zeffer a clean bill of health he's still not showing signs of a healthy appetite. And today he had 2 cases of soft slimy looking poo (the poo examined was solid. Can one fecal sample come back negative even if they have parasites? This is supposed to be the best reptile vet in NC. They specialize in exotics and the owner does seminars nationwide.
Has anyone tried parazap? does it work? is it worth the price?

Hi!
Do a search on this forum for "parazap" and you'll find plenty of reading about it and can form your own opinion. Or you can try their website for more specific info @ www.parazap.com.
I personally have had two dragons that stopped eating, lost weight and were looking pitiful. They are on a cricket diet (plus greens & pellets) so I assumed that parasites were the cause. They weren't eating and therefore didn't poo during "Office Hours" so that I could take in a sample, SO I ordered and tried the parazap. Both have completely recovered after 5 & 7 days respectively of administering the "parazap tea". They are back to their ownselves eating like little hogs
I personally would never be caught without it, ever.
It certainly wouldn't hurt to give it a try for the lack of anything better to do. It's very frustrating to watch them just sit there totally uninterested in food.
I would suggest you be consistant with twice daily soaking, about 20 minutes at a time is what I do. It will really help to keep the dragon hydrated and going until they start eating.
If you try the parazap and do not have positive results, then certainly another Vet visit is in order.
Good Luck!

after you make the tea, do you let them drink it out of a dish? or do you give it to them with a syringe? And if they make no attempt to drink it, do you try to force their mouths open?
I'm new to all this so any help would be appreciated.

I tried dripping it off their nose after drawing it up in a syringe (without the needle) but they just sat there letting it run off their chins! SO, my daughter would wrap the dragon in a washcloth just under the neck to secure the front legs & body. She'd hold the dragon upright, as if it were standing on it's back legs like a human does, then by gently pulling on the beard with one hand, the dragon will open it's mouth and I kinda slowly squirt the tea in their mouth from the syringe in my other hand while still holding onto the beard. With the dragon in the upright position, the tea will go down the throat into the right place. I had no luck with trying to give it with the dragon on a table, in a horizontal position.
Your partner will have to be good at keeping them from squirming once they start feeling better, it's not too much of a challange when they feel bad.
As far as the dose goes, I believe it was B22 who said that he gives 1cc of the tea per each 100 grams of the dragons weight, 1/2cc for a 50 gram dragon, 2cc for a 100 gram dragon, etc. That is the formula I used since none of them would actually drink it, some dragons will drink it on their own from what I hear, but not mine.
I would give it once daily and was thrilled with my dragons improvement on the 5th and 7th days of giving it.
Please feel free to ask anymore questions, no problem

The vet weighed him yesterday and said he was 86g. Does that sound right for a 10 week old?

Sharla May 24, 2003 07:34 PM

That sounds reasonable. That would be about 8/10cc or 9/10cc (.8cc or .9cc) of the parazap tea.
Have you reviewed all your other set-up details to make sure everything else is right? I believe you have posted below about your dragon but I'm not sure. Maybe you have already covered that.
Good luck!

Zeffer currently resides in a 4'x2'x2' cage with 2 screen doors(which I am replacing soon with plexiglass cause he's a climber). The ambient temp is between 80 - 85 and the basking spot is between 100 - 110. I have 2 different size rocks side by side for him to bask on. So as far as I can tell everything is fine with my setup. If I knew how to post pics I would let you see the setup and maybe you could give suggestions.
Thanx.

I also have a 2' Desert 7.0 fluorescent bulb in it.

Your set up sounds great.
When writing a post, if you look down in the right hand corner it says: "Tools and toys"
It tells you how to post a pic
