Beardie smell

BCRHerps Apr 14, 2009 10:04 PM

So as odd and mean as it sounds...my Beardie stinks, like really bad

It doesn't go away when I wash her either I will even take a washcloth sometimes and "scrub her"(gently go down the scales over and over again) and the smell sort of goes away but she still stinks

I have her on tile and I clean it everyday so is this just something that I will have to deal with?

What does she smell like? I use a soft toothbrush when I bath them, they seem to like how it feels. When I get real close to mine there is a slight smell almost like butterscotch or something. But I've never noticed a foul smell from a clean dragon.

I just thought they smelled like lizards. When they are wet they smell like wet lizards, lol, sort of like wet dogs smell like wet dogs.

But at a reasonable interacting distance, mine don't smell at all. I only notice it if I put my nose to their backs and sniff them. Perhaps it walked through some feces and has a dirty tail?

My Iguana smells like a purse.

BDLvr, I don't quite now how to take that comment, LOL!

As a woman who owns an iguana, are you saying you like iguanas and/or purses, or that you don't like either?

BDlvr Apr 16, 2009 10:30 AM

Well first off I'm a man so I'm not much into purses. lol. But he smells like one. I'm OK with him, he has his good days and bad days. About 2 weeks ago he bite me pretty significantly, he's quite large and weighs more than 15 pounds. I ignored him for the whole next day, didn't even look at him or feed him. He's been a big puppy dog ever since. And people think lizards are stupid.

Either her cage isnt' very clean, or she keeps tracking through her poop every thing she goes....but after a bath, dragons don't have much of a natural smell. Its there, but its not overly strong or powerful.

If your dragon really smells bad. I would take her next bowel movement to your vet for a fecal. Internal parasites can cause a very foul smell which may linger even after clean up.

If her cage smells fine after cleaning and she smells fine after cleaning but starts to smell bad before her next bowel movement..either you have a very sensitive sense of smell or something is causing your dragon to smell when they shouldn't.

A skin rash, fungal or bacterial infection on your dragon could cause a smell. Some good clear pictures of your dragon's back, underside etc. will help reveal if she has any fungal infections of the skin.

This really is the only things I can think of which would cause a dragon to have a smell that is noticeable except up close. (but up close i mean inches from your nose)

I bathed her today with a Toothbrush and some light soap from a bar of soap and she smells a TON better so I suppose I just wasn't cleaning her all the way

Thanks for the help and advice
