albino burmese python not growing help!

zsazsalbino Apr 15, 2009 11:23 PM

hi!

i have an albino burmese python and she is 27 inches.
when i got her she was 23 inches.
she is 10 months old.

i understand that she should have grown about 7 feet in one year however she has only grown 4 inches in her first year.

the reptile store i got her from told me she was snappy (had attitude) and that she would grow 7 feet in one year.

she has absolutely no attitude and has only snapped twice, and has not grown.

i feed her the appropriate size mouse every 5-7 days and she always eats with no problem. she never regurgitates or anything un-ordinary. basically she is very healthy.

the only strange behavior i have noticed is that she continues to attempt escape from her terrarium even after she is fed and would not regurgitate after being handled right after feeding.

if anyone can help me make sense of all this all comments would be appreciated and helpful =)

Thank you.

This is a quote from Bob Clark's website:

"The growth rate of Burmese pythons can be influenced by several factors, with the snakes being capable of an almost unbelievable rate of growth under ideal conditions. Burmese pythons that are kept at temperatures in the mid- to high-80s, and that are fed all they will eat twice a week (on average), can reach a length of nearly 10 feet in one years' time. In contrast, I know of a Burmese that was fed only one mouse every 10 days, and in seven years it reached a length of only slightly more than 4'/, feet. I obtained this snake, and after a year of heavy feeding it reached a length of 11 feet."

I would ask yourself if you really want that snake to grow so fast. Once burmese pythons get big they can be extremely dangerous and require two people to handle if it ever needs to be moved. Just be sure you've done some research on this and are ready.

I agree with anuraanman. Burms can be a handful when quite large. Also having previously worked in the pet store industry I would definately have that animal vet checked if you have not done so already. I have seen far too many pet store animals with parasites or that are ill. Now this is not true of all pet stores but it is something to keep in mind. Also keep in mind that pet stores will often say what it takes to make a sale. Just for the future. Remember that is not true with ALL pet stores.
