breeding session ?

herpster82 Apr 16, 2009 04:37 PM

Was wondering what would be considered an abnormal length of time for a pair to stay locked up together while breeding? I put 1 of my male mole kings in with his g/f lastnight about midnight. I got way to tired after keeping an eye on them until 3am.I woke up around 11 this morning & they were still HOOKED up. Now im sure they could of taken a break idk for certain so this is the reason for my question.

Thanks Joe

im guessing they were Locked up for entirty, When i was 10 ish i had a Fem box turtle that was locked for a Looonnnggg time with my buddys male turtle and we broke the general rule of a few eggs,my Mom rescued a baby turtle monthes later from the bottom of our pool, and ended up with 14 baby box turtles all books said 4 to 6 eggs, Mom was Busy....BTW the rescued baby was blinded from pool water (and didnt drown?)Mom would feed them on can cat food in the kitchen sink....

It is hard to answer the question, as of course, snakes can breed for any amount of time. The longest I ever saw personally was a pair of cal kings that I owned that bred for over 24 hours.

Would you say the longer they are hooked up,that the chances are greater for more eggs and/or an all around healthier clutch?

Thanks

My first thought to your question would be yes, but at the same time, I know you can get decent breeding results from shorter hook up times as well. I would think overall that longer breedings may POSSIBLY result in, simply put, better results, but it is hard to say. The female that was in the " 24 hour breeding" pair would lay the same amount of eggs in her clutch each year, which was 14 eggs each time, regardless of the breeding time. All other times were much shorter than 24 hours.

Take care!
