How old and how big is the Beardie?

garth_905 Apr 17, 2009 09:30 AM

approx 8 months

digging isn't a bad thing... 8 months is rather young for a female bearded dragon to be producing eggs, though they can produce eggs at that age. Its not typical.

First though, is your dragon female? If its just male, then eggs certainly won't be a concern.

Other reasons dragons dig is to get out of too hot environments. Check your temperatures to make sure you have a sufficient cool end temperature (75-80F daytime) and your warm side air temperature isn't over 90F (not basking temp, this is air temp, basking temp should provide a range of 95-120F)

Wanting to hide due to being in a totally new environment can also be a reason. Is your new dragon in a glass aquarium in a high traffic area? Covering the back and ends of your cage will give him a better sense of security.

More information about your setup and environment and your dragon, will be beneficial.

Digging is natural, instinctive behavior for bearded dragons.

Definitely won't have to worry about eggs in a male...but since I don't really trust most pet store employees on their ability to properly sex animals, below is a link to help you sex your dragon just to make sure it is male.

www.dachiu.com/beardeddragoncare/sexingdragons.html

When I have encountered pet store employee's who can't even sex nearly full grown mice (which is about as easy to sex after 5 weeks as a human infant is) you can see why I don't trust them to sex something that isn't quite so obvious.
