Male chewing / eating eggs ?

GLZ Apr 18, 2009 02:49 AM

I knew our female was about to lay eggs, today while feeding them I noticed she finally laid the eggs ... but a couple eggs were visable, looked kind of like broken eggs.

I set those broken looking eggs aide in the enclosure while I looked for the rest of them ... the male ran up like I just threw crickets it, he grabed up a egg and started chewing on it, serious he was going nuts trying to eat these eggs.

I wasnt aware males will eat/try to eat the eggs, first time I ever saw anything like this or even heard of it.

Anyone else ever saw this happen?

I'd make sure he's getting enough to eat. I've never heard of Beardies eating eggs but who knows. I use a separate nest box where the female is alone. Even when a female has dropped a couple eggs in her enclosure I've never seen any other dragon have an interest in them.

Never heard of dragons cannibalizing their own eggs but your male may have thought you were giving it food and snapped them up.

However, its best to separate the male from your female when she's obviously gravid, this way she's not being bothered or stressed while trying to find a suitable egg laying site.

Once you don't leave eggs where other dragons can get to them, you shouldn't have to worry about then being eaten.

I have a female that cannibalizes her eggs, but just a few. We have to watch her lay and take her out when she's done. I don't know if they are infertile or if she's hungry. She also stops feeding for about a week before she lays. I've also had beardies who seem like they would eat a rock if you dropped it in there, LOL! I would just keep them separated if you want to salvage future eggs (I understand they were broken and you just dropped them in).

I have 1 female that does something similar to this to her own eggs. She has had several clutches and has done it with each one. She doesn't eat them though. She lays then turns around to bury them then bites some of the eggs(puncturing them) and licks the yolk before covering them up. None of my other girls have ever done it. The behavior has lessened over time. A large portion of her 1st clutch was lost due to this but now she only does it to a few eggs now.
