Simple question.
I am getting a young BP.
the question is. I know a 40 gallon critter cage is OK as an adult...should I get that to start with, or is there a need start out in a smaller cage?

I don't think there is any real reason you couldn't start out with that. Beginning with a smaller tank will make it easier to clean, heat, etc, and the snake may feel a bit more secure in something smaller to begin with. But in the long run, you don't have to worry about upgrading when the snake outgrows it and the stress of changing setups (on the snake). Just my opinion.
If you'd like to avoid spending money on cage upgrades you can go straight for the 40 gallon. I did this with my BP and sectioned off about half of it until she started getting larger, then gave her the whole space.
