Clown Clutch From Start to Finish DUW

fgs Apr 19, 2009 11:07 AM

Here is a photo history of my clown's fist clutch. I also had the clown with a clown and a pastel, but double hets would be pretty nice.

This photo shows her positioning her eggs. When I came upon her she was totally upside down.

I was lucky enogh to walk into my snake den just as she was laying her 7th of her 8 clutch.

I hope everyone is having a great season.

wow lots of luck! My albino just had a clutch of 5 eggs and I had no clue she
Was even gravid? I'm praying they stay good untill monday when I get my incubator. I have her at about 89-90 and have been misting her twice a day! Any suggestions or thoughts? Thanks and lots of luck on that amazing clutch!

I would get a large hand full of sfagnum moss, get it soaking wet, ring out most of the excess water and then place it on the warm side of her cage or tub. The heat will cause the moss to evaporate thus increasing the humidity inside her enclosure. I would not mist the eggs, only increase the ambient humidity.

Another thought would be to go ahead and place the eggs in a plastic shoe box like the one I showed in my post. Drill a 1/8 inch diameter hole at each end of the box about an inch from the top. Mix equal parts of vermiculite to water by weight (the key is to mix it by weight) and place the eggs on the cool side of the mothers enclosure. My guess is the cool side is somehwere around 82 to 85 degrees.

Initial temps are probably not that criticle. I would be more concerned about getting the eggs too hot than too cold.

When I used to breed colubrids I use to incubate the eggs succesfully on the top shelf of my closet, with out any heat.

Good luck and if you'ed like you can call me at (408)981-6694

I wish I had this info on Friday at this point it's one more night and my damn incubator will be here! So you think the temp of 89-90 is too high? The only thing is the room in which I house my animal platica rack gets hot and cold depending on the outdoor temps and tonight into tommorow Its going to get a little chilly so I hope that one more night and they will be fine? I keep my snakes at work and I have been there morning and night to check temps and to mist by the way I misted nicely this morning do you think I can skip one night? Which would be tonight! I can not wait to get this hovabator. The eggs do look really good I just hope they will be good when I move her tommorow? Thanks for your input I really appreciate it!

No, 89 to 90 degrees are the optimum temps for incubating ball python eggs. I think it's important to note that incubating over a heat source is much different that incubating where the temp is consistant uniform.

Good luck

I just went to my job and check her and she's just wrapped on them like no tommorow. Well where she is coiled around the eggs Its about 87 now I just seen your message about the heat temps I have no choice but to the morning and maybe lower the temps to about 84-85? And hopefully incubate them tommorow! I never incubated anything before I'm hoping the hovabator is easily set up and no promblems? Thanks again for your help and will keep you posted!

I wouldn't make a lot of changes to anything including temperatures until you are ready to place the eggs into your incubator.

The important thing is not to change the orientation of the eggs when placing them into the incubator. Most likely they will be stuck together. Make sure you place the eggs into the incubator in same position they are in when you remove them from your female. I know I'm being redundant, but this is criticle.

Do you have anyone around you that is mentoring you?

Please let us know how things work out.

How will you know if you have double hets if you bred a pastel with her as well?

John:

That is a great question. I got a little carried away with the males that I placed with this female. There is a part of me that hopes I produce the entire gamit of offspring from this breeding, clowns, pastels het clown, and mojaves het clown. If I do produce normals that show a strong pied mark I will either hold them back for myself to prove they are double hets or sell them as het clowns.
