A quick trip to the white tanks.

Snowfeet Apr 19, 2009 05:20 PM

Last wednsday a few friends and I went to the white tanks even when it was only 65 degrees out and still found three Great Basin collareds wondering about.

Here is the first one which was spotted as it was running under a rock.

Here is the next one a small male found running across the wash

Here is the last one which was found basking in the middle of the wash on a small rock.

We also went to the estrellas and found a chuckwalla, but we were looking for sonoran collareds. Can anyone give me a hint on what type of habitat they live in, like washes, hillsides, ect.

Check hilly areas with lots of rocks. They like lava rocks for basking but just a personal observation of mine, they still bask on all kinds of other rocks. If a water source is close that helps as well.

If you get lucky and find a colony of them, the largest and most dominant males have the largest rocks and best basking spots, another personal observation.

Good luck with your search-When its 65F outside thats the air temp, ground temps are much warmer touch a rock or sand that the sun has been hittig next time your out.
