Update on first YT clutch

briansharp Apr 19, 2009 09:59 PM

I thought this information might be of interest, as the lengths of time involved in both the incubation and hatching were very unusual, at least in my experience. The last hatchling finally emerged today after 131 days in the egg! Hatching for the entire clutch spanned 13 days from April 6 until April 19, far longer than any other Dry clutch I've known. So not only did the clutch incubate for far longer than normal, once the eggs began hatching it took nearly two weeks for all offspring to hatch.

I'm exhausted, and there is another clutch still to hatch! LOL

Congrats, Brian. The timing aspects are interesting.

As a contrast, my first BT clutch, which my breeding loan partner was incubating, started pipping 10 days ago after only 75 days.

the cooler temps and longer incubation, in effect, growing the babies slower would give you better hatch rates in the end? Is a little less heat better?

Within limits of course, I think a little less heat is better than a little too much heat. However this was not by design, and I will try to have the eggs a little warmer next time.

Good to hear everyone hatched out ok!

FL_Herps Apr 20, 2009 08:13 AM

better late than never! lol

Yeah, I guess the accidental lower incubation temps had a pretty significant effect. Great to hear they all hatched though.

Can't wait to see more pics!

Oh, and assuming that the second clutch takes about the same amount of time to start hatching as the first one, what is your predicted hatch date?

Alex,

The second clutch has been incubating for 100 days as of today. When I noticed the first clutch not beginning to hatch in the usual 100 days, I moved the second clutch up one shelf where it is slightly warmer. I would expect the second clutch to start hatching in the next week or two.
