thereptile May 24, 2003 05:58 PM

hey,
i was outside looking for some bugs for my school collection and I found these weird looking crickets and some meal worm like things. I suspect the worms to be larvae of something theyre really small but feeding on apples and some oats i put in there. The crickets have bigger then normal legs and more curved body. I found pinheads so I grabbed a few but havent fed em to my animals. Lemme know what you think. theyre wc. thnx tito

yea 1st off...if you havnt totally found out what the animals are, dont take the chance with feeding them//...its not the best idea to feed wc insects to your herps period, because of the danger of foriegn toxins and pesticides...the cricket like thing, could be a black cricket (instead of the domestic grey cricket) or like a katydid or grasshopper or somethin;...

but dont feed them to your animals, well at least i wouldnt

I agree, don't feed your bearded wild caught insects especially when you are not sure what they are. There is a good risk of toxins from insecticides and fertilzer that may not be in such quantifies to kill the insect but as these poisons tend to accumminate in teh body, it can quickly and painfuly kill your reptile. You are better off buying captive bred insects or breeding your own. Better to be safe than sorry. Another thing to consider is parasites in wild caught insects.
