Speckled racer photos..

Male and female adult Drymobius .. near Brownsville, Texas..
.

.

.

.
.. I see these frequently, but irregularly.. usually as they are leaving my field of view! .. It was a treat to see them sitting still. Their sex-drive must mix-up their flight response.
.
Have fun, play nice.

Those are gorgeous! I've looked for them on two different trips with no luck. Nice find.

That would be a LIFER for me. I've seen them in Mexico but NEVER in the U.S. I've been to Brownsville 5-6 times and looked for them but didn't have the luck of the "IRISH" like you do. Shoot it's not luck but you do see a lot of them and I'm envious...Very Impressive...

Great pics. I had a speckled racer for a couple years when I was a kid. I got it at pet store in Phil. Pa. I haven't seen any offered since. I guess thats good for the snakes. I would love to get down there some day, I'm not that far here in sw La.

I was just showing these pictures to my sons and told them that was the first snake I ever kept. I got it at Martains aquarium just outside of Philadelphia in 1988.

Great pictures!

Wow! and what's the chance of me catching a photo of a snake you had way back then?! How do you suppose it got to south Texas? . and for you to recognise it after so long.. Amazing!

Always enjoy seeing quality Drymobius pictures. This is a dream species for me to see as well.

Just curious if you or Tom or anyone else has seen both the Texas/Mexico forms and and the Honduran forms in person?

If so, are the Honduran forms anywhere near as nice looking as the Texas/Mexico forms?

I have never seen in person the U.S. form but have seen them in Tamaulipas and in Belize. The ones from Mexico look like the pics that Gus took. In Belize they are not as nice looking but in some areas are incedibly common. In a village called Guinea Grass near Orange Walk they were everywhere even in vacant lots in town. You could easily see 8-10 in a couple of hours looking. They are diurnal and incredibly fast as well. Usually you heard them and caught a glimpse as they dissapeared in underbrush. My kids kept a couple for a while and they were nervous captives but not too difficult to keep. At certain times of the year we fed them Red Eye Tree Frogs because they were so abundant. Lizards were taken as well....
