Q about Argentine (B.C.O.) Gestation...

JJsBoas Apr 20, 2009 03:24 PM

Hey Everyone,

Everyday I get REALLY jealous seeing everyone's new litters dropping. This time of year is always a very exciting time for us boa people.

Anyway, here's my question. My pair of Argentine boas (both male and female are pure B.C.O.) finally bred for me this year. The female ovulated on about 3/29/09, and she had her P.O.S. on 4/18/09. Very exciting for me as I've been growing this pair up since 2003, this is their first year together for breeding trials.

My questions are:

-How long is the gestation period for Argentine boas?
-Is the gestation period similar to B.C.I., i.e., should I expect babies at about 105 days P.O.S.? -- If 105 days is also typical for Argentine boas, she is due 8/2/09

I'm very curious about this because I had to try something different with these Argentines to get them to breed. My boa room stays fairly warm over winter (never drops below about the low 70 degrees ambient temperature) and while the B.C.I. pairs were courting and breeding, the Argentines would simply stay on opposite sides of the cage. I had a spare melamine cage in another room of the house that got ALOT cooler than the boa room (likely into the 60s during winter). So in January I put the Argentines in the cage out of the boa room; and, what do you know, within a day or two the male Argie was courting the female. It was cool to finally figure out these guys , so now I'm wondering if there is anything else different about B.C.O. gestation. She is currently thermoregulating from over the heat pad at night to the cool end during the day.

Any insight and help is truly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Good luck with everyone's remaining expected litters.

All the best,

Jay

What's up Jay? I don't have an answer for you but best of luck and congrats on a promising start! I hope all's well in the hot room.

Hey hey Kyle,

What's happening, buddy? The BCI pairs are looking alright. I've had better years though. The ghost litter is giving me a headache. She swole up pretty good during what I though was her ovulation and had her POS right on schedule, but now she looks "deflated" so I'm just hoping she pulls through ok and passes whatever she has in her. She's due 2nd week of June, so we'll see I guess.

The other gravid girl is looking ok, but she didn't have a POS so I don't know when she's due. And the super hypo pairing is giving me another headache. The female looks to have had at least her pre-ov swell, but I haven't noticed an ovulation. However, she is on the small side so I'm not really expecting anything big from her. Again, we'll see.

How are your gals doing?

Jay

Well I hope you get a couple of good litters, you always seem to.
The Jungle litter looks promising and is due mid/late next month. This waiting thing is stupid.

Forgive me for asking but what does P.O.S. stand for. I only know one description which I'm sure you all know too.
