What kind of snake is this?

kfoll May 24, 2003 05:59 PM

I saw this snake today on a hike near Summerville, Georgia... in fact, I nearly stepped on it. Luckily it was pretty lazy, or else it had just shed its skin or something because it didnt try to get aggressive. But it did slither away after a few moments, and as it did, it puffed out its neck and an unusual pattern emerged... the 3rd picture depicts that. I'd appreciate if anyone expert in snakes could tell me what species this is... I was fairly sure it is some kind of pit viper but can't really make out which because of the lack of pattern. If it isnt then it would be interesting still to know what it is.

Looks like an eastern hognose (Heterodon platyrhinoes)to me. They are completely harmless but they will spread out their neck (like a cobra) and strike repeatedly. Most of the time, these strikes are closed mouthed fakes anyways. They also like to play "dead" if all else fails. They are very interesting snakes and always a pleasure to find in the field.

Mine does that all the time. Then I pick him up and say 'Don't do that'! and he stops.

Thanks everyone for your prompt replies. Its good to know I didnt almost step on a poisonous snake. And I'm glad I saw that neck-spread thing myself, or else I wouldnt have believed it heh.
