Could I?

DillanSimpson Apr 21, 2009 09:07 AM

I have a rack that holds 8 to 12 qurt tubs and heated of heat tape course and controlled by a helix but could I use it for a incubator and just get a tub with no holes cause that rack stays 80 to 83 day and night and it would be for pueblan milks.

Oh and I was gonna use hatch rite is that ok to?

Anything that maintains your proper incubation temps and humidity will work fine. You can use a $600 incubator, a $40 styro incubator, a home made incubator, or in some cases (for some of us here) a warm closet, and they ALL work pretty much the same.. And, the the best part is that your eggs have NO idea what type incubator they are in!

I have used HatchRite in the past and saw NO difference in incubation and/or hatch rates. And, contrary to their claims, I did need to add water to the mixture. It's fine to use, but in my opinion it's not worth the additional cost.

Good Luck!

Thanks and in the egg box aka tub should there be any holes or no?

MikeRusso Apr 21, 2009 10:12 AM

Well, that's really up to you.. But, I use sealed boxes with one or 2 very small airholes and i open the boxes once a week (or more) to inspect the eggs and exchange the air.

I just got a couple more questions when the baby snakes are hatching should I remove the ones that are complety out of the eggs and put them and another tub or will they be ok in the incubator?

When I do remove them should I put them on a damp paper towl or aspen?

And should I seperate all them righ away or will they be ok together till there frist shed?

MikeRusso Apr 21, 2009 10:57 AM

Again, these are really personnel preference questions, so you may get a few different opinions on this, and they will all be correct.. But, I usually just leave them all in the incubator till they are all out, then i move them all together into a small tub with damp incubation medium and they all huddle together under the hide box.. Once they shed out I then move them to individual enclosures with paper towel substrate.

Thanks Greg!

This pair locked up today for the 3rd time this season.. I am really looking forward to this clutch!

I can't take the credit though... Jerry Kruse thought they would be a good pairing this season!

Mike, how much water did you add to a bag of hatchrite? I bought a bag this year and am planning on using it in my incubator. Thanks

MikeRusso Apr 21, 2009 10:43 PM

Sorry, but I don't remember the exact amount of water i added... But, even if i did that would vary considerably depending on how much medium you use in your box and your overall incubation techniques..
