Black Milksnake off feed

Joeycoco98 Apr 21, 2009 06:48 PM

My male black milk has never ever missed a meal but this last feeding he refused. He is over three years old so this may be a breeding thing. I thought black milks breed later in the year than North American milks, I am off base on this? Otherwise he is completely healthy and active

Thanks,
Miller

I bet he is just distracted by breeding season, especially if you have a female black milk in the same room.

My one adult breeder is trying to breed the female now (even though she is not ready yet) and he has lost interst in food.

I wouldn't worry unless this continues into mid summer.

Dave, do you house yours together all the time, or just this time of year?

Kent,

Just in the spring. I introduce the male periodically after brumation but very frequently after the female ovulates. Then when the job is done, he'll stop showing interest and they are housed separately for the remainder of the year.

To answer your other question about humidity, I just give them large water bowls and don't do anything special otherwise and they have appeared to thrive this way for years. I do not provide a humid hide for them, although I don't think there's anything wrong with that if you want to.

Thanks for the comments, I have a two year old female in the room but she is about 3ft so don't know if she is giving off any scent yet, but there is a female eastern king and a female florida kings maybe it one of them. So, do they breed at the same time as NA milks or later in the year?

I think they tend to be later breeders. Mine will usually breed after the female sheds a second time which is usually in mid to late May.
