So where is the best state to go Herping

symetryexotics Apr 21, 2009 11:41 PM

I was wondering where the best place to go Herping is. I live by
Portland Oregon, but want to Venture out of Oregon. Not too much
in Oregon, unles you go to Southern Oregon, but still is limited.
I have always wanted to go to the Everglades, but I am not sure
if hikers can go there or not.
Any Opinions?? I would love to hear them! I bet Mr. Tom C. has
quite a bit of experience living so close to 'Wildlife'....

Thanks in advance

There are many hiking trails through the Everglades Wilderness Area. This includes much more than just the National Park. Altogether the area is about 4,000 sq miles and yes if you know HOW to look herps are abundant including many nonnative species like Burmese Pythons which are quite common. For instance where I live in extreme SE Fl I can go out any day and catch 15-30 Corn Snakes in a couple of ours if I wished to. But the hunting technique would seem quite odd to the uninformed and an average person might only find one or two per day.

Here's a few Glades pics of wild herps...

You must be including lizards. I have had plenty of snakeless days in Southern AZ. Even snakeless weeks...drought sucks. Even though it sometimes holds its secrets close it is beautiful country and deserves to be enjoyed regardless.

I like Arizona . It doesn't matter where you go you have to be there at the right time and know the right places. For me Arizona has the best combination of scenery and interesting less commonly seen reptiles. Florida would probably be my second choice. I haven't been to AZ in a long time but........

I do live in Florida and my property is LOADED with reptiles and amphibians along with just about any other kind of wildlife you can think of.

On any given morning walking around from my tortoise pens to my snake building or down the driveway, out back at the ponds . I can find anything from a ringneck snake to an indigo maybe a gator in one of the ponds, diamondbacks, rat snakes all kinds of lizards including spiny and green iguanas ... veiled chameleons .......it's silly. Bottom line in my opinion Arizona is still the best all around Florida is also very good. The pics are just a slice of what I find walking around my place. Most just walking down my driveway.

Gravid veiled chameleon , eastern diamondback , indigo , coral snake,

There is not a day goes by here in southwest FL, where i dont see some type of herp. I live near a year round canal, so there are gators 15 ft from my house all the time. Lizards, snakes, its sweet.
At work the other day, I removed this little guy from the neighborhood streets. I have some huge ones around my house.
I see alot of nice corns also. I live surrounded by 45-50 acres of woods, so its like a mini sanctuary near me.
Id like to know Tom's method of finding corns though.
Take care
Mike
I love the herps, its the fire ants i cant stand ..argh!!
