Sulcata and Box Turtles

mjk317 Apr 22, 2009 07:32 PM

I live in North East and I have 10 Box Turtles in an outside Pen. I have had them for several years. I also have 2 Sulcata tortoises that are about 3 years old. The Sulcata's are kept inside, this summer I want to put the Sulcata's out when the weather is 85 or warmer. Can I put the Sulcata's in the same pen as I have my box turtles? The pen is very large and plenty of room for all of them. I just want to make sure that I will not have any issues if i combine the two different types. thank you very much mjk317@aol.com

I keep many box turtles outside year round in my yard. I also have one sulcata and two leapords that I also keep in the same yard as soon as the summer temps allow it. I live in Dallas so I am a few days or a week away from the night time temps being warm enough to spend the summer outside 24 hours a day. I have been putting my sulcata and leopards out during the day for several weeks already. I have never had any issues keeping the three species together. However i do not have pens as mine free roam the entire back yard. The box turltes easily hold there own amongst the larger torts and the boxies breed every year for me.

There are some issues with box turtles sence thay are known carriers of Amebiasis -Entamoeba invadens. If you have an enviornment that is suited for one animal and not another like E box turtles and sulcuta, one will become stressed so if its the box turtles they could shed this Amebiasis to your Sulcutas. So in your case what enviroment would stress what species.Carriers look fine so one could have them checked or seperate or roll the dice.
