A nice litter yesterday of Sharp Snows

kblumenthal Apr 24, 2009 11:01 AM

My male Sharp Snow was bred to one of my female DH Sharps (not his mom). He did a great job for being an 18 month old when he started the breeding. There were 1 Double Het Sharp Snow, 1 Anery Het Sharp Albino, 4 Sharp Albinos Het Anery, and 8 Sharp Snows! There was also 7 sweet potatoes and 1 not-fully-formed baby.

Mom (Cartagena) was nice and calm when I took her out of the cage. She looks great and took a rat with no problems which is always a good thing. I was able to get her out about 15 minutes after she was done with her contractions/delivery. She went to one end of the cage away from the babies, so it made it a little easier. She went 111 days POS and had been cruisin' around her cage for the past couple days so I knew she was close. With her going full term, none of the babies have yolk sacs and they all seem to be in great shape.

Some tub shots:

Here is a pile of snow ....

Thanks for looking!

Thanks Mike, I only have some pics of him from May of last year. Since the weather is finally going to be great this weekend here in Jersey, I will see if I can get some time for a new photo shoot outside. Here he a pic from May of last year with a female '07 Sharp from a separate litter (he is the larger of the two):

I will be sure to post some new pics of him on Sunday or Monday.

kblumenthal Apr 24, 2009 03:37 PM

Thanks Ryan I appreciate it bro but it was actually 8 Snows (I couldn't resist). Who says Jersey water is bad?? Since the water can glow in the dark, maybe it makes for better litters !

What a great litter. Next thing you will tell us is the snows are all males. Your hard work with this project is really paying off.
Bill

kblumenthal Apr 24, 2009 06:37 PM

Yep, all males - good call ! Just kidding, I haven't sexed them yet. Thank you Bill for the compliment, I really appreciate that, especially coming from you. May there be good mojo your way for your upcoming litters this year.

gainesreptiles Apr 24, 2009 04:52 PM

Not only a remarkable number of Snows, but I am probably more amazed that the male was only 18 months old ... my experience indicates that this is very unusual for a Columbian. I guess I had better keep my mouth shut when I tell people that Columbian males really need to be at least 2-1/2 years of age, preferably 3-1/2 ... so much for experience?

Once again, a BIG Atta Boy!

gainesreptiles Apr 24, 2009 04:55 PM

I guess I was too busy thinking about those Snows.

kblumenthal Apr 24, 2009 06:43 PM

Thanks Bill for the kudos it means a lot coming from the King of Snows!
My little stud of a snow was leaving "presents" in his cage at 16 months. I hadn't planned on trying to breed him until this year (2009), but since he was leaving signs I thought I would give him a shot at the big leagues. I made sure to give him breaks every couple weeks and keep him fed to keep his energy level up. He didn't let up for the entire 3 months that he was with the female, the little horndog!
