Yearlings have them and then the sub adults and adults I pull them away from them.
matt
Mine don't....I've never needed them.
I provide them to those individuals that seem to prefer them. If I pull their hide and they seem to be stressed because of it I will offer it back.
However, I follow the general guideline of, "If it's not broke, don't fix it."
If the animal is feeding and behaving in a non-stressed manner, I won't make any changes to it's environment.
This includes:
-moving it to another tub (whether that tub is the same size, in the same rack, or is somehow different - it doesn't matter)
-Changing the size or shape of it's water dish or hide
-adding or removing the hide or offering additional water dishes or hides
-switching to a different substrate
I have a few different substrates I use with my collection and some of my animals prefer paper-type cage liners, some want aspen, some have fir bark... each seems to have a substrate that it does the best on. Once I figure out that individual's "preference" I will seldom stray from it or make changes to it's environment unless it is absolutely necessary.
I know some people believe that you can treat every snake in their collection the exact same way, but I prefer to allow them to tell me what they want or need.... they never lie.
I feel a good tight hide spot is essential to the mental well being of snakes and lizards.
