Scored big at hamburg!

asnakelovinbabe Apr 25, 2009 10:06 PM

yea!!!! As I slowly am moving not-garters out of my collection... the empty spaces are filling back up... with thamnophis! Today just rocked. First, I picked up some snakes from Rhea:

She had 4 red sideds born last week. They are now residing with me! It appears to be 1.3 of them. (yay, i finally have red sideds) Thanks Rhea, they are beautiful little buggers, and now you'll get to watch them grow up big and strong! They had their first meal today, they all took chopped nightcrawlers off my tongs like they were pro's at it!

I also got this female checkered from Rhea, whom I learned is possibly gravid to a lime green male. Her eyes are GORGEOUS! To me, she does look like she's in the early stages of gravidity.

I also picked up this big female checkered from a buddy vendor of mine... she's BIG, and very friendly. But even the owls are afraid of this one.

So I am walking down the aisle before the show opens and I see some albino checkereds... no biggies cause I am not really interested in them... then the word HYPO catches my eye. I stop. I stare. No way. Is that REALLY one of those new super cool codominant Hypo checkereds??? For sale??? HERE?! At hamburg?! Turns out, it was true. And he only brought ONE to sell. He said his female hypo is gravid and she was bred to a male hypo, to see if there is a super form. This snake has a glow that's hard to capture with a camera. They really stand out. They only get better with age. The crazy head and neck pattern top it off. This is a male, and since this is codom, any female I breed this male to will produce hypos in the first generation!

I know he doesn't look like much now, but there is a definite difference between these hypos and other checkereds!!! You have to see it in person to really get it.

So just when I think I have enough checkereds to take over the world... A table with a bunch of normals catches my eye. Because one of them is so much brighter than the rest. So I figured, for $14, plently of space in the baby racks, and a beautiful glowing baby checkered that is even brighter than a proven-genetic hypo... what have I got to lose?! Even my boyfriend was able to pick this one out of the bunch. The lady was looking at me weird because I didn't want just any... I wanted THAT ONE.

So... I had a great day. Good show. Scored a nice morph. Can't possibly get any luckier... right? right....? wrong. Last aisle... I look to my right and yell OH MY GOD NO WAY THOSE ARE RUBRILINEATUS loud enough to get a whole bunch of people looking at me weird. But they were!! Red Striped Ribbons! He had three young adult females, sadly no males but he's going to try hard for next show. I grabbed the larger 2 for $35 each. They are flawless, beautiful, and surprisingly mild mannered for ribbons. I love them. I love today. I love reptile shows. I love thamnophis!!

Congratulations SLB! welcome to the "codom hypo" club! These things really color up as they grow, so prepare yourself! Checkereds really are the ultimate garter...

Nice red-stripes too. I guess we take them for granted down here since they are fairly common in the Hill Country. But they certainly are gorgeous!

Thank you, I am truly still in shock that I was able to find one of these so soon. Like... I am SO happy... words cannot describe.

I'll keep an eye out the next couple of weeks, and if I come across a male rubrilineatus I'll let you know....

No problem at all-I was fishing along the Guadaloupe just last week and saw a small one.

Of course, as soon as you try to look for something, that's when it disappears!

that's so true too!!! My grandparents own a farm, and on top of the hill one of their relative's properties is laden with smooth green snakes. I always see them there. So the one time I take my boyfriend up there to see some... not a snake to be seen!!!

thanks for keeping an eye out, I appreciate it, both of my red stripe girls had HUGE portions of silversides and trout today. I am not a huge fan of ribbons, except for these. They are exceptionally pretty. I am so surprised at how calm these two are around me and during feeding for not being captive bred. Since they are recently WC, do you think there's any real chance a male could have bred them before the guy found them? They certainly have good appetites!

brhaco Apr 26, 2009 09:21 PM

If they were collected recently, there's a good chance one or both might already have mated. Time will tell.....

he said he won't get "back out that way" till next year...
same guy with yellowbelly racer and the coachwhips?...
I wanted the whips, but thought against it more than not...the easterns black faces were so cool...!...I did get one yellow belly racer ...he had 2 females..no male....hmmm....she ate, never bit or musked yet so seems cool....I was also hoping she may have been bred before getting captured...but she is maybe a little small yet?...not sure the full size of them...

good luck...cool snakes , all of them....

Yes, I did leave one smaller red stripe at his table. That was also a female, I was bummed! We even probed it to make sure. He also had 3 normal western ribbons. I did see the yellowbelly racers... gorgeous snakes they are!!!
