Using Heating Pads in Vision Cages;

avtdocz Apr 26, 2009 01:07 PM

Ok guys, I know it's been a long time since I've posted in here, I've kind of been in Iraq for the last 6 months, (still here too, but coming home in a month!! Hells Yes!!)

Any ways... I've got a sub adult BRB (male) that's grown like a weed since I've been gone and need a new home for him.

I might build one, but with the humidity, I'm thinking about going Vision, maybe boa plastics... but... I like the combo of over head heat and belly heat... makes for a great heat sandwich, as close to real heat in the wild as you can get... BUT... how do you use the heat pads in the vision cage... online they have several models that say "heating pad compatable"

Thoughts, complaints, or other insight... fire away guys...

It's good to be back in front of a computer again!!

I thank you for your service to our country !!!

I would go with a Boaphile, Animal Plastics, or a Barrs cage (Doug Barr). I use a lot of Vision cages but their design does not promote high humidity. My Barrs cages hold heat and humidity like the Amazon Basin. BRBs need high humidity with moderate heat. They thrive at 80 degreesF with a hotspot max of 85 and heat above 90 could be fatal, so you might not need dual heat. I use the Exoterra Heatwave pads on all my cages with no problems with years of use. I attach them to the outside cage bottom with aluminum foil tape so I can move/reuse the pad. They are thin and even recommended by the Vision Company. Bill.

Holding humidty I'm not overly concerned about, I'm using a humidair system I made, 2 quart bucket, big air stones in the bottom, a couple 100 gallon air pumps and a out put hose to the enclosure... The volume of the pump may have to be replaced, but putting humid air into the enclosure vice spraying has it's advantages...

I will admit that the sliding glass doors on a vision don't exactly promote a good seal, run a 1/2 inch strip of that fuzzy weather stripping in between the two panes of glass, bamm... sealed, well... not perfect, but better than stock!

So, the heat transfers fine through the bottom of the plastic cages?? I was thinking go inside, attach the pad to a natural floor tile, like slate or clay, and burry that into the subtrate... hmm... very interesting...

That sounds like an awesome humidity device you described. The problem with the Vision cage design is their massive top screen vents that let most of the humidity rise out. Newer cage designs have vents lower on the sides. I block off most of the Vision cage vents to keep humidity in the cage. The gap in the doors is actually benefical-the real culprit is the top vents. Usually the under tank pads heat through the substrate well. Bill
