WHAT A MESS

snakeeyes1618 Apr 26, 2009 06:01 PM

So I accidently got mixed up and put my male in with female. I had no intention on breeding this year but it happened. After I found out they were together (the next morning) I made sure I wasnt going to have the train wreck I did last year with losing my female becasue eggs got bound. So I put a nice lay box in with moss and kept it nice and humid.

Well this is what I found this morning. A complete mess. My temps are between 83-87 degrees humidity is always at 50-60 usually 60 (I live in FL). I feed my animals small rats and large mice depending on the size of the animal. Am I doing something wrong or is it just chance. Last years clutch looked pretty much the same out of 15 eggs only 4 hatched.....Looks like i get none this year....WHAT A MESS

you accidentally put them together once....

maybe if you put them otgether more often the sperm count in her oviducts would be high enough to fertilize all the eggs....

they need to breed a few times to get a good count....
the male needs to have enough to give

breed more often, take male from brumation a week ahead of the girl....gives him time to eat and get ready...
and breed them as soon as she sheds after brumation .....if they breed too late, after ovulation it's too late...

....with just 2 fertile eggs from 15 it would look like and seem to be that the eggs dropped maybe (into oviducts out of ovaries) and there were no sperm to fertilize them....the 2 at the back end of the rows of them might have picked up sperm quickly after a late breeding...but they rest of the sperm can not ,and could not swim up through oviducts that are already full of ovum (unfertilized eggs).....

...breed more often and earlier....corns breed fast...it takes them just 10 minutes.....

no brumation needed, just start breeding in March after every female's shed...

....good luck

Heres the thing I wasnt planning on breeding at all this year, but when you knwo the possibilities..I cant help but get excited and then when i saw the eggs it was a let down.

I had just finished building my new racks, and was cleaning all of them for the first time and just had a brain malfunction and they ended up together.....it was for one night...I know that It should have been more to be compeltely successful I just had some high hopes. Never had those two together and I have no idea if they are het anyhting so I did get my hopes up. OH well maybe next year.

Thanks for the advice they will defaintly be togheter longer next season.

all of my animals are late breeders i tried this year to breed them at the begining of march but it didnt work. they will all probally hook up in the end of may to beginning of june as they normally do. i also get an average clutch size of about 17 all good eggs.

I know this has probably been answered hundereds of times but, how long do you keep the male in with the female?

This answer is going to vary from breeder to breeder.

Me personnally, I leave them together for an entire week and then seperate to feed and put them together for another week. So on so forth until I am sure that the females are gravid.

This season I have a major field herping trip that will keep the snakes apart for a week but they'll be back together as soon as I get back home.

cherokee_reptile Apr 27, 2009 07:10 PM

I tend to leave mine together for a couple weeks only seperating to feed.

the two on the right are the only two that look remotely normal. I'd say the whole left section is trash. sorry to see so many duds. At least your female did not bind up.

>>Well this is what I found this morning. A complete mess. My temps are between 83-87 degrees

Temperature. Cool it down. Surprisingly, we've found male cornsnakes that were completely sterile for many weeks following access to temps as low as 85F for an extended period of time. Long story how it happened, but we've had no such temp-related problems after corecting the matter and reducing the temps by a couple of degrees.

Obviously, some males will remain at warmer temps longer than others (even in the same environment), so not all of the males respond the same to those warmer temps, but enough did to teach us our lesson. Also, ALL of them had access to the cooler side of the cages (76-78), but that didn't seem to matter. The warmest temps they had access to influenced fertility rates more than the coolest side. This would take further investigation, however, before I would say therwe are no large exceptions.
