Favorite terrarium plants

yeagermeister111 Sep 12, 2003 08:29 PM

I figure it may be useful for others if everyone posts their top couple terrarium plants. I'm a big fan of non show quality bromeliads ordered from Tropiflora (which are substancially cheaper than any others), new fan of the Pleurothalid alliance orchids, and now also a fan of epiphytic philodendrons.
Best,
J

I love moss! The stuff is just wonderful. Java moss is one of my favorites. Takes a while to get it right though.

I also really like my Lilaeopsis brasiliensis (aquatic grass) and any species of Selaginella.

Often I end up making a tank- not for the frog, but for new plants. Made for a frog, but really to showcase the foliage.

I just let them live in a nice place.

I'm also a moss freak!! The more moss in a tank (if it's placed properly) the better it looks! Java moss rocks!

Justin...as far as ground plants, I would have to say alocasia's (I have many different species growing in my house) and for epiphytes, I'm partial to most species of bromeliads but my favorite would have to be the Aechmea blanchetiana. I'm also a small leaf philodendron/aroid nut.

some favorites are; alocasia 'Elaine' , bromeliads (Neo Fireball cv. Black Current is one of my favs though), jewel orchids, mini orchids, and syngonium rayii to name a few. i am interested in getting more philodendrons and aroids (small leaf varities especially). so, does anybody know a good source for small philodendrons? thanks.

the title says it all. They have a wide selection of tropicals and their prices are great!

thought I've never had them in my terrarium due to fertilization needs, Im a big fan of orchids. I have quite a few here in the house, mainly Phalaenopsis and Dendrobium spp. I'm also very partial to one particular little Peruvian gem...the Epidendrum ellipticum.

My favorites are mostly epiphytes ... Dischidia sp., Polypodium sp., Anthurium Scandens, Begonia Thelmea (just got some - awesome stuff), Pyrrosia sp., Aeschynanthus sp., Rhipsalsis sp., and miniture orchids.
I got into epiphytes after finally getting fed up with the constant trimming of ficus pumila (my least favorite terrarium plant).

Donn,

The B. thelmae will grow like you wouldn't believe...pretty soon everyone you know will have some. I'm in the process of figuring out with Harry what plants to get for my order. Take care.

I'm not really a plant guy, so this might sound odd.

I really like curly Ficus, I think there might be more to the name than that, but it climbs and covers cork great. In my opionion its easy to grow and looks great after it has covered the cork. Only bad thing about it is cutting it back each month or so.

So far I can't stand broms, which I will have to get over to get some of the frogs I want. The whole pup thing is a pain to me, and my fireballs never stay red, they tend to turn a dark green.

The whole pup thing isn't that bad once you get used to it... some pups are easier than others though.

The thing with any of the red bromiliads (fireball and many of its crosses) is light.... if they go green its usually because your light isn't strong enough. Power compact flourenscents are a great way to solve this problem, and I hope to add them to my rack soon, but I have to finish up my new tanks first!

I personally love bromiliads, but I also like the aroid/vining small philodendrons (have some in each tank), varoius syngoniums (especially rayii) and I am also a fan of pepperomias.

kyle1745 Sep 16, 2003 07:33 PM

What I have noticed with the pups is that they grow arround the plant thus making them long and odd shaped. Also I use 6700k lights on my tanks, and my fireballs still turn green.

I'd have to say Anthurium Scandens is one of my favorites, the aerial roots they shoot off are cool.I am also getting into some orchids.I have 2 young Angraecum Distichum and one Haraella Retrocalla. The H.Retrocalla and a nice bllom that was just starting to open and I think one of my bicolors knocked it off.Anyway, it has a new bud forming so hopefully when it opens up the bicolors will have settled down and won't climb as much.I also like any species of ferns and my newest ones are the resurrection ferns. They are growing slow but they remind me of the one I'd see in books about dinosaurs when I was a kid.

I have several favorite terrarium plants. Most particularly, I really enjoy the rainbow club moss (Selaginella uncinata), orchids (Ludisia discolor and an unknown Dendrobium that has bloomed nicely), and my Neoregelias (fireball, liliputiana, ampullacea, and liliputiana x fireball). I do have a few ferns that have done very well, also: the resurrection fern (but it definitely needs to be moist at all times for good growth--at least in my experience) and the lemon button fern. Finally, if you have big enough frogs, a Nepenthes (tropical pitcher plant) can be really cool, and grows quite nicely!
