A newbie question from an old timer.

ZigZagOne Apr 30, 2009 05:29 PM

Ive had a few stuck sheds in 25 years but this one takes the cake.My 9 month old Kankakee bull refuses to shed the top half of his body.Maybe I missed a bad shed but he sheds around the same as my female like clockwork. There both kept at the same temps and humidity and have many things to snag a shed on.
Now to the point.Raised the humidity to near for one week.Didnt work.Put him overnight in a damp pillowcase.Didnt work.Let him soak in tepid water for 30 minute intervals twice.
His skin seems to be glued on because I can barely pick any of it off. This guy is very sensitive and has no problem breaking his teeth in whatever he can hit.The stress Ive put this poor guy through has put him off feed but he still drinks alot of water.
Im currently looking for other options.Thank you in advance for the replies.

Should have read 90 percent humidity.

ive had success in similiar situations by soaking them in a tub of tepid water for 6to8 hrs, afterward feed as much as they will eat and up their warm side to 90-95, good luck.

Ive tried to feed after every attemp.I have a female russian rat that I soak then feed a medium size rat.Works like a charm for her.Ive tried tease feeding and live. All he does is hiss and strike.
Another silly question.Would he go off feed because my northern pine female was breedable?Or maybe the light change?Ive had males that had no problems with copulation at eight months.Pits are new to me. Ive had my pines maybe 3 and a half years but Im still allways learning. Thanks Tom.

Hi ZZ1. I am new to pits also, but I have run into this similar deal with another species. I have had an anaconda go into a false shed.(they spend 90% of their time in the water) They go into the blue just like any other shed, clear up and no shed. What happens here is that the thin layer of liquid between the old and new skin dries up for no reason. The old skin stays and is stuck like glue! No amount of soaking can remove it. The best thing to do is keep him a little on the humid side. Keep the skin from drying out completely. Only deal with him to do routine care. Let his stress level come down. Give him a week or so before feeding. If he starts eating again, feed him twice a week to push him into another shed cycle. He may even enter another shed cycle in a short time on his own. This is what I ran into, maybe this will help. Good luck. Rich

I thought I was going crazy. My female russian rat has been doing that to me off and on for 4 years.I keep a good variety of high humidity snakes and inverts with no problems.Thank you brother.Pauly

Sounds like the snake wasn't ready to shed. I would not try to assist it the shedding process. I would just put a larger water bowl in it's cage to soak in if it wants to. I'd also make sure the cage is warm enough to allow the snake to want to soak. It might take a couple weeks.
