A Question about posting snake bite stories opinions needed

budman 1st Sep 12, 2003 09:05 PM

Okay as you know some of us are interested in snake bites.
And scan the web searching for bite stories.

When one is found It gets posted simple as that for many years.
I find it very usefull information to everyone.

Here is a question or two.

1.Do you think is ok to post these bite stories?
2.If you know the victim do they get special treatment or
is it still ok to post them if they are truthfull?
input please.
Thanks
Bud

Personally, I appreciate the info...It's also good for A) Keeping the religion...That our friends do have consequences B) Shows we are all human and not immune to screw ups. I've not been shy about mentioning my own, so why not?

I think posting snakebite accounts on the internet is useful. The only thing I would suggest is to not include any info that would allow personal identification of the bite recipient unless he / she gives permission to do so.

Cheers,
WK

Having been on the receiving end of some pretty ugly press when I was bitten, I feel qualified to express an opinion based on experience. If the FACTS of the bite case are disclosed, it rarely harms anyone. Inuendo, conjecture, rumor and lies cannot possible do anything to help the recipient of the bite, and they certainly do not further the hobby.

I also would echo the sentiments of Dr. Khan, in that if it is POSSIBLE to get permission, it would be the right thing to do. Sometimes it is not possible (I was not able to to speak in the condition I was in for 18 hours or so) to get permission. Even in cases where permission isn't obtainable, I doubt that someone would mind terribly unless there were laws broken too....

I'm not sure if you are talking about posting news links or anecdotal accounts of these incidents. Perhaps you could clarify that one point for me...

I agree with both of you. mainly news press links and stuff if they are factual.
Im getting 4th hand he said she said data coming in letting me know a individual is extremely upset about my posts where I painstakinly edited Out his name.
after reading your replies I dont feel like I did any great injustice. heck it was on the news/radio live for a couple days every half hour.interviewing all his angry hood members they all spoke his name. I am the bad guy ha ha
Like I thought.
If i get bit bad some day I expect the same thing.

Well, if it's the Florida Mamba bite we're talking about here, then I felt you did a good job of keeping the venomous keepers informed of his condition without disclosing the gentleman's name.

All I ever cared about was whether he would survive and if his animals had been left in a safe condition to prevent injury to others. All the hoopla about keeping the snakes in a mobile home park was just that... hype

If this fellow managed to get a venomous permit in Florida, it means he had his facility inspected and it passed muster. End of story, as far as the animals go... as for the human side of this, I hope the keeper has recovered and is doing well... that's the side of the story the media RARELY tells, because there's no sensation in a full uneventful recovery....

I see nothing wrong with what you did.

This story, as well as all of the others would have had a lot less sensationalism about them if everyone was being responsible with the owning of venomous snakes... keeping anti-venom on hand.
I know him and he should have had serum on hand, if the mamba would not have been returned to it's cage the story headlines would have been, "Escaped mamba kills man, family and half the neighborhood"!
If one is not responsible enough to own their own anti-venom, than one is not responsible enough to own venomous snakes! Period!

Do you honestly believe that the "sensationalism" would have been spared if he had his own av? If he had his own av, they would have found another way to "sensationalize" what had happened, the fact that he didn't have his own av had nothing to do with it.
