Eastern Kings are less abundant in the western piedmont and foothills than they are in the coastal plain/eastern piedmont, probably because it is drier out here and there are fewer turtles. I have spent the last five years setting up sites, talking to people, searching for eastern kings, and documenting what I find. As a result, I find 5-6 eastern kings each year in the western piedmont/foothills now vs. an average of 1 per year from 2000-2005.

Here is a habitat shot of a site that I set up a couple years ago.

A perfect little yearling female eastern king. They may not be as abundant out here, but with their blue/black color and thin bands, they are better looking than anything I have found from down east.

Found last night around 8:10pm. Taken home for photographs this morning and released where found...
