Hmmm, was asked an interesting question.

rainbowsrus May 02, 2009 04:34 PM

A guy I've been chatting with for a while has a Peruvian. Not sure is it's a male or female. Probed as a female but still not sure.

Any ways, the question is do BRB's have a hemipenal component to the shed like GTP's do? First off I have no idea if GTP's have a hemipenal component to the regular shed. We (I) got side tracked into what we're calling hemipenal sheds during mating before I realized he was talking about normal sheds.

So, I didn;t know the answer and did not have a male shed to check. Later that evening one of my breeder males shed and I also have a females shed. No hemipenal component to the shed. However, I did find that the vestigal spur IS there and is covered by a scale. And, the male spur is longer/larger than the female.

This is a single male spur, right side out, shed folded si it protrudes...

And another pic showing the male spur on the left and a female spur on the right...

Clearly not different enough IMO to be used for sexing an individual, but still cool.

Both Savannah and Phoenix have minimal crescents and Savanah produced Amber, A,mber has NO crescents at all.

Soooooo, I'm hoping for some high red, eclipse phase (no crescent) in this litter.

very interesting dave. After that post, im going to have to sift throw a bunch of old sheds to check it all out. Maybe not a good way to sex, as you said, but there is certainly a big difference there. I wonder what other hidden finds, the sheds have?

My male chondros sometimes have hemipenal sheds attached to a full shed, but not always. I have a 60gm neo that had what looked like hemipenal sheds just recently. My big male from Mike has had several sheds with hemipenal sheds attached. He's just recently gone off of food and the shed included much more substantial hemipenal sheds than his shed from a few months back. I wouldn't say its a reliable way to sex a chondro since there are certainly many sheds that dont have the hemipenal sheds, but if they're there, they're pretty obvious. I have not noticed obvious hemipenal sheds on BRB sheds, but then again I've not really taken the time to look. I've got two adult males deep in blue right now, I'll make a note of their sheds and report back if I find them to be similar to chondros.

I'm pretty good with palpating BRBs, the "BBs" are quite obvious to me. I've found them on a few other snake species here, but have not been able to find them on my chondros, including those who are known to be male.

The spur shed pix are really neat.

Thanks for sharing these pics. I will have to look closer at the shed's from my larger BRB's to see how well this shows the sex of the animal.

Very cool! I never thought to look for the spur on the shed before. I had a male shed today and so I checked... sure enough! Thanks for sharing!

Dave,
...I have not seen hemipenal sheds attached the the full shed in Rainbow Boas. I do see the sheds from the spurs. Your PIC really shows them well.
