Nest Box question

sean1976 May 03, 2009 11:47 PM

What size container is needed for cornsnake nest boxes?

The main reason I ask is because the dimensions I've read elsewhere would seem to be too large for the tubs in my rack. I have the adults in CB-70 replacement tubs from vision and the listed dimensions are 34x17.5x5.3
The nestbox size I read in Don's book listed 12x8x5 as the minimum size for a nest box. Now the length and width are no problem but the height is since my tubs are only 5.3 tall so there would be no room for her to enter unless I cut holes in the sides.

Mainly I'm wondering how deep the nest box has to be.

Sean.

I've been using plastic shoeboxes for at least 10 years.
Those are only 3-1/2 inches tall (with floor space of 7 x 13 inches).
They may be too small for very large corns, but work for any corn under 3-1/2 feet.

Hey, I use shoe box containers for my nest boxes. You can get them at a discount $1 type store. On the rack systems that I have that are short, I cut the hole in one of the shorter sides, but near the top. Just under where the lid snaps. This allows the lid to snap, the snake to crawl in and out, and still have at least an inch for substrate.
I have seen pictures of some people's nest boxes. It seems mine are large compared to some others. I have seen the large butter tubs (think they are a gallon), and tubs where the snake has to coil up and lay the eggs practically on top of herself.
Like I said, I prefer the shoe boxes. The different brands make different demensions.
Hope this helps

I use a couple different size boxes this year i bought a shallower box for the females the floor space is close to the same. I also have used a 10 dallon aquarium with spaghnam moss in it and put the female in it after the pre lay shed.
